Terminology Used by Gift Basket Companies

Fruit baskets are popular gifts for any celebration. Customers enjoy selecting an basket that they know will appeal to the recipient or themselves. It's a great appetizer for a party or token of love for that special someone. With this type of service, the company's creation includes hand selected foods and bottled beverages that are packaged and delivered to the recipient. Before ordering an edible arrangement, learn important terminology used in the business.

  • Dry Ice – In hot weather, to keep perishable items fresh during until the carrier brings them to your door, dry ice, carbon dioxide in a solid form, is used. By the time the perishable items arrive, the dry ice usually has evaporated but did its job keeping the items refrigerated during transport. Some companies prefer to use bags of ice instead of the chemical.
  • Edible Bouquet – This is an arrangement resembling bouquet flowers that instead uses chopped fruits to create the colorful blooms. Many items are dipped in chocolate first to create a decadent creation.
  • Occasion – This is an event where it is appropriate to send a gift. It may be an anniversary, baby shower or Christmas Eve. The recipient may be feeling down and need something to bring a smile to their face or it may simply be a great way to say thanks for a job well done.
  • Perishable – Perishable products are those that need proper handling and timely shopping to prevent the items from going bad. Leaving a parcel out in the cold can damage these items and storing them in the heat also ruins them.

Gift baskets may well have a long history, and their origins remain uncertain. Even today, the basket itself is generally hand woven. Baskets are one of the few items that resist mass production by machine, although cheaper gift baskets may come in plastic or wooden fake baskets, with only a pattern on the outside. Most gift baskets contain at least some edible items, although ones containing soap and other toiletries are not uncommon. The creation of a basket is complicated and involves a certain amount of artistry. Some have flowers or even small bouquets in them. The arrangement of items within is as important, in some ways, as the contents. Presentation is key. Bouquets are usually placed to one side. The rest of the basket is filled with edible items. Fruit, either fresh or dried, is fairly common. Baskets are also sometimes used to present fruit for parties. A gift basket is likely to contain gourmet food or wine. Cookies and cheese are also popular, as are small bags of popcorn. Chocolate, needless to say, is found in many baskets. These gifts are offered on all kinds of occasions. They range from sympathy baskets that commonly contain flowers to wedding presents. Get well soon gifts containing fruit and flowers are also found. They may be given for a birthday or an anniversary or simply a thank you. Baby baskets are a fairly strong tradition, perhaps due to Moses having been found in a basket. Holidays also attract these gifts for Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and, very commonly, Easter. The arrangement and creation of gift baskets requires an awareness of all of those occasions and a similar level of artistry to that used in arranging flowers. Many gift baskets are shipped or delivered straight to the recipient.
