The following terms will help you understand what building a garage is all about.

  • Contractor – Someone who works under a contract to build your garage. Always read the contracts carefully and make sure the contractor can offer a warranty for their work.
  • Modular – A pre-engineered structure. Since this building is prefabricated, installation costs will be cheaper than using a traditional building. Will often offer kits for sale to make the buying process easier. If you have simple requirements for your garage, using modular buildings are a thrifty option.
  • Custom Design – A building built exclusively for the buyer and unique in appearance or dimensions. This is the more expensive option as it requires detailed construction plans and close work with a local contractor. If you have big plans, such as reconstructing a turn-of-the-century barn, using custom designs are probably the way to go.
  • Remodel – To reconstruct a previous building, usually for improvement. Remodels can be as simple as adding new garage doors to creating a loft area above the garage.
  • Attach – connected to the main dwelling. Most garages are attached to the home.
  • Detach – Not connected to the main dwelling. Buildings such as tool sheds and barns are detached from the home.
  • Car Port – A garage that lacks sides or a door but does have a roof, providing basic shelter from the elements, but is not an ideal space for storage.
