Is is a car-hold, storage unit or garage?

A garage can be used to store more than just a car. Some garages are constructed of steel, while others are of wooden framing and attached to the house itself. Whatever you use a garage for, know some of the basic terms associated with this important part of any house.

  • Garage - this is usually attached to a house and is the location many park their cars. Larger properties have detached garages. All are required to have two exits. Where one is usually through the house, the other is the large opening of the garage door.
  • Garage door - this is the large, steel door that is lifted up using a motor and springs attached to the beams of the garage. It comes in various sizes, in sectional pieces and in others, one solid piece. Doors and motors are sold as kits.
  • Opener - this item is an electronic, remote control device that opens and closes the garage door. It relays information to the motor using a special frequency that is good for only those two units. For safety, openers only work on a specialized frequency.
  • Shed - this is usually a detached, prefabricated structure that sits on someones property. A shed usually holds lawn equipment or other materials you don't want seen inside a garage. In the past, most sheds were build out of metal with steel framing. As material has become less expensive, most are built with a wood frame and with siding to match the house.
  • Car Port - this is a semi-enclosed space directly adjacent to a building that is used to shelter a car or other vehicle. They merely provide shelter and do not have doors. Those that are in parking complexes of of metal construction covered with material to match surrounding buildings.

Building a garage can be a great way to secure extra storage capacity for your house. Garage kits can be purchased in wood or vinyl. There are also prefab metal or steel garage kits available. The kits should include all of the necessary parts to assemble the garage. A garage can serve as a method of protecting your vehicle or to gain extra work space. If you don’t plan on parking your car in the garage, a shed may be a better option. If you are just looking for a place to keep your car covered, then a port would be something to consider. A car port doesn’t require a door. The most common garage door is sectional. These can usually be operated with a remote door opener. The other kind of door would be a single panel door. The disadvantage to a single panel is that it requires space outside of the garage to open. A sectional door would allow a driver to pull right up to the garage and still be able to use the opener. A steel metal garage is an excellent work space. It can be used to repair a motor or a vehicle. You can shelter your sports or vintage car until spring. You can utilize a garage or a shed by adding cabinets and keeping extra clutter organized. This would save money from renting a local storage space and keep your home clean. If cost is an issue, don’t jump to the conclusion that this is not a worthwhile project. There are certain luxury pieces to a garage that aren’t necessary depending on how you will be using it.
