Important Glass Block Terms

Glass blocks resemble bricks, however, these clear blocks contain certain design and privacy elements that make them attractive pieces in residential settings. Glass blocks are often used in bathrooms, because they limit visibility inside a shower, while still allowing some light to shine through. Sliding doors and windows may be made of glass to bring a certain aesthetic look to a bathroom. The glass designs can match the mirrors and tiles in the room. The tiles can also feature any number of patterns and colors.

  • Glass Block Window - Glass block windows are installed in bathrooms to allow light to shine through and prevent those outside from being able to see through. Similar to how bricks are stacked, glass blocks will be put on top of each other until the desired effect is achieved.
  • Glazing - Glazing is a term used to describe the part of a wall or window made of glass. Sliding doors may also be glazed.
  • Partition - A partition is a divider that separates two areas. While they can be made of any type of material, glass blocks and mirrors are one option. For example, a walk in shower may have a wall of glass blocks that partitions the spaces in the bathroom. These partitions are used for aesthetic and privacy purposes.
  • Dichroic - Dichroic glass have micro-layers of oxides that give the glass optical properties. This type of glass is able to transmit color through light that is reflected. The colors may change depending on the angle.
  • Stained Glass Window - Stained glass windows still allow light to shine through, but again the visibility into the space is limited. Stained glass is often dyed or painted, the glass itself may also have a wavy design on it.

Glass blocks, architectural elements made from glass, are also known as glass bricks. They are unique in that they let in light but obscure definition. Glass blocks are frequently used in building design, often incorporated into bars, gyms, hotels, restaurants, and offices. Initially invented to bring more natural light into dreary industrial factories in the early 1900s, glass blocks can now be used as shower walls, windows, and partitions. They can be clear or colored, featuring etched designs or plain ones. Whether cube shaped, brick shaped, or rectangular shaped, these blocks are great for privacy. Customers often buy glass blocks from manufacturers that specialize in these types of pre-fabricated products. Glass block types can range from dichroic to cloudy to parallel to wavy. Companies that sell the blocks and cubes usually also sell related accessories such as frames, anchors, and caulking products. Glass blocks are typically thicker than standard windows, thereby affording a certain additional measure of safety. And, aside from privacy, they also provide an interesting design touch to any room. They give the illusion of more space simply because of the light being let in, so glass blocks may also make a small area look larger. Another benefit to glass blocks is that they are more energy efficient. There's really no limit to the colors and patterns a consumer can choose for their residential or commercial building projects. Manufacturers of glass blocks often offer several different types, sizes, and colors. From clear to etched, glass blocks may be a wise choice for rooms of any kind, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and offices. Contractors, designers, builders, and the general public can find out more information on glass blocks by searching the Internet. They can head to a home improvement store for more ideas.
