Terms to Know for Go Carts

Go-carts, which can also be spelled "karts," are fun recreational vehicles. They can be rented at amusement parks, for parties, or even used in a high speed race. Unlike bikes, these carts need to be specially equipped for their terrain. If you are interested in finding out more information about the different types of go-karts that are available, like manual or motor-driven, try beginning with the terms below:

  • Superkarts - This sport is a form of high speed racing around a track, but with drivers using go-karts, rather than cars. The vehicles used are four wheel vehicles, fitted with aerodynamic bodies, gear boxes, and other special features.
  • 4-Stroke Engine - This is a standard engine used in golf carts, go-carts, some ATVs, dirt bikes and other vehicles. It is an internal combustion engine, with the piston making 4 separate strokes to operate. High performance vehicles may be using 2-stroke engines as well.
  • ATV - This acronym stands for an all terrain vehicle. It can include quads, three-wheelers, and other vehicles that are equipped for off-roading, or going through the dirt. It can also include some altered golf carts.
  • Electric Go-Cart - These carts are operated with lead-acid batteries, which are able to be recharged. They are commonly used for indoor tracks, since they do not emit any pollution.
  • Suspension - This refers to the vehicle's shock absorbers, springs and support system that is connected to the wheels. This system helps with braking and handling, allowing drivers a smoother ride if properly equipped. Special suspension is required for off-roading karts.

Go kart racing and off roading can be a fun activity for adults and kids alike. If you are new to the go kart world, you may want to go to a family recreation center that has an amateur raceway. For a small fee, you and your kids can ride around the track. The amusement center will supply the carts and helmets. Most of these go karts are motorized. Another fun tradition is for adults and kids to build a go kart together. Building a cart can be fun. You can make your cart battery powered or even make it manual and use it for downhill racing only. ATV vehicles and other off road vehicles can be fun to buy or rent. These vehicles have larger engines and should be driven by an adult. Make sure to put the correct kind off gas in your off road vehicle as some may require diesel fuel. It is a good idea to always check your vehicle's suspension and motor after a ride on rough terrain to make sure that it has not been damaged. More manufacturers are beginning to release electric powered off road vehicles. Many people believe that these vehicles are better for the environment so they are becoming a popular addition to the off roading world. ATV racers can also be used on the beach. It is important to make sure that you check with the rules of your local beach to see if this is allowed. Some beaches ban them because they do not want other beach goers to get hurt or the sand to get ruined.
