Miniature Golf Terms for Beginning Golfers

Miniature golf is one of those great activities that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family. And while most of us have driven by a miniature golf course, not everyone is familiar with how the game works and what makes it different from other types of golf. There's a lot more to the game than elaborate obstacles and distractions for children. Whether you're playing indoor or outdoor miniature golf, here are some terms you should be familiar with.

  • Cosmic/Glow Golf - These are normally indoor courses that are lit with black lights and painted with neon paint to maximize the black light effect. Because of the necessity for dark and black lights, most cosmic courses are indoors.
  • Green - The grassy area surround the holes on a golf course. Because most mini courses are indoors, the green is normally made of Astro turf.
  • Miniature Golf - A form of golf played on short putting greens that are normally decorated with elaborate obstacles.
  • Pitch 'n' Putt - A form of golf that utilizes only the short game on very short fairways and greens.
  • Putter - A flat faced club used for rolling a golf ball rather than elevating it. This is the only type of club used in mini-golf.
  • Tee - This term refers to the starting point of a mini-golf hole rather than a device for elevating a golf ball.
  • Water Obstacle - Any body of water placed in the way of a golfer's approach to the green. In miniature golf, they are sometimes incorporated into the shot when they are used to power windmills and other objects.

Mini golf courses are fun for all ages. Parents can bring their children for some family time, since many have arcade games, laser tag, batting cages, and go kart racing. Some mini golf courses are located next to a driving range for people to practice their driving skills. Mini golf courses often have food for sale and allow customers to rent their facility for a party. Customers can visit several courses to see what games they offer and how much they charge. Batting cages, driving ranges, laser tag, and 18 hole mini golf courses allow children to play what they enjoy the most. Tee ball, go karts, and putt putt golf courses range in price, but are very affordable for family fun. Mini golf courses provide golf clubs and golf balls to play with on the greens. Putt putt golf often has courses where players have to avoid a pond or hit the ball through an object, such as a castle or windmill, to make it to the hole. Call multiple locations to learn more information about local mini golf courses. Employees can reserve the facility's banquet hall for a party over the phone, but a deposit is likely to be required. Some courses allow kids to play on their own, but they may have a minimum age requirement to do so. Some mini golf courses have websites for customers to browse to see what games they offer and their pricing for parties or to simply play a game of putt putt golf.
