Key Terms Relating to Government Services

There are many circumstances in which you may qualify for government services or benefits. The government holds auctions to sell off their assets. Some of these auctions can be found online if you wish to participate. You can qualify for food, health or income assistance depending on your situation. Most federal and state services may only require you to fill out a form with documentation. You can pick up the form at a local agency or print online. Become familiar with the following terms relating to government services before filing an application.

  • Food Stamps - A type of government benefit offered in the U.S. that gives qualifying citizens an allocated monthly amount to cover food expenses.
  • Medicare - An American federal government health care program for senior citizens aged 65 and older. Some people of younger ages can qualify for benefits, such as those who are disabled.
  • Medicaid - A state health care program for citizens that have low income and resources. Since this is a state government program in the U.S., the qualification procedure can vary by state.
  • Laid-Off - A term that refers to a worker who loses his or her job due to lack of work. This is an alternative to being fired or quitting and may qualify you for unemployment compensation through the state government.
  • Social Security - A government resource that provides a monthly benefit to senior citizens. In America, there are several other benefits that fall under social security benefits including disability.
  • Disability - A person who cannot perform the tasks associated with previous employment without disability accomodations and may have a difficult time adapting to a new industry.
