Grain Elevator Terms to Know

Grain elevators are essential equipment for all components of the grain industry. These facilities are responsible for receiving, handling and storing grains. Here are some of the terms that you might encounter when looking for a grain elevator:

  • Auger - A component of a grain elevator that conveys the grain with a spiraling motion. It is contained in the trough or tubing of the elevator.
  • Elevator Leg - A conveyor belt that brings the grain up and dumps it in the garner. The garner stores the grain temporarily and is located above the scale bin.
  • Scale Bin - Used to measure and weigh grain that is deposited in the elevator.
  • Hammer Mill - The component of the grain elevator that smashes the grain with use of swinging hammers.
  • Country Elevator - A type of grain elevator that buys grain from farms and resells to a terminal elevator. They are usually smaller and are seen in some farm storage containers and stores and small factories.
  • Terminal Elevator - A grain elevator that buys grain from country elevators or farmers for distribution to exporters or grain processors. These are heavier and have a higher capacity than country elevators.
  • Silo - A large storage bin used for storing grain such as corn and wheat. Silos incorporate spouts for removing the grain into containers for transport and handling.
  • Fugitive Grain Dust - Dust that is released during the process of handling grain.
  • Mixer - A component of an elevator that uses spiral-shaped augers for blending feed grains.
  • Pellet Mill - Equipment that uses steam, molasses and other substances to form pellets.

Crucial elements to any farm, grain elevators are buildings or structures used for storing grain. Also called silos, these structures are tall and narrow, and are used by farmers for storing, drying, and processing grain. Animals like to eat grains such as corn, wheat, rye, and barley. These silos provide a place to keep these grains and process them until ready for use. Grain elevators feature buckets, pulley systems, lifts, transport equipment, and dryers. They can also comprise storage bins, grain handling and processing equipment, augers, conveyor systems, and scales. Temperature monitors, tanks, and level indicators are also common features of grain elevators and company mills. Farmers can purchase grain elevators from wholesalers and direct from manufacturers, and have them shipped to their door. These entities can provide delivery and installation of grain elevators. Farmers also have the option of constructing one on their property, especially if they need a very large, complex building or mill. In this case, they can hire a contractor for the job, one that is skilled in grain elevator construction. Dealers of grain elevator equipment such as storage bins, tanks, spouts, and lifts also typically provide repair services. This entails qualified technicians who come out to the site and fix any equipment that is malfunctioning. A wholesale company may also provide parts replacement, with online or print catalogs of replacement parts for steel and concrete grain elevators. Because wholesalers often sell their products in bulk at a discount price, this is an incentive for customers to buy lots of one thing at a time, such as bins, buckets, or feed. Such dealers can be found online, via business or agriculture referrals, in the phone book, or through private sales.
