Common Gravel Terms

Buyers use gravel for many commercial and residential projects, including garden improvement efforts and the building of roads and driveways. Below are seven terms to be familiar with when shopping for gravel.

  • Aggregate - Materials used in construction and landscaping projects, like the building of driveways and gardens, for creating composite materials and drainage systems. Common aggregates are gravel, crushed stone, and sand.
  • Concrete - A composite building material used to construct buildings, roads, sidewalks, and driveways. Concrete is made from a mix of cement, water, chemicals, and aggregates. A fine aggregate, like sand, and a course aggregate, like gravel or crushed stone, are both needed to produce concrete.
  • Mulch - A material placed over the soil in a garden to retain moisture, prevent the growth of weeds, and protect against soil erosion. Mulches made of gravel mixes and crushed stone may prolong the growing season in a buyer's garden by keeping soil warm in cool weather.
  • Gravel - Stone that has been broken down into pieces, typically, by the natural processes of weathering and erosion. Gravel is used as a construction aggregate and as a type of mulch in landscaping projects.
  • Crushed Stone - Rock that has been broken down into fragments by a machine. Crushed stone, like gravel, is used in building and landscaping projects.
  • Quarry - A large pit where rocks and minerals are mined. Gravel and crushed stone are often extracted from quarries.
  • Limestone - A rock composed of calcium and carbon deposits that is used to construct buildings, make household products, and as an aggregate.
  • Sandstone - A type of rock composed of compressed sand and mineral deposits. Sandstone is often a sandy tan color, but it can be yellow, red, pink, or white as well.

Gravel wholesale distributors often sell a wide range of products for decorative, building, and industrial purposes. By choosing a wholesale company that has the types of rocks, pebbles, and crushed stones that they need, buyers can gain access to specific types of materials for their projects. Gravel wholesalers most often sell their products directly to other companies, many of which are involved in road and driveway construction. Using the right types of gravel mixes makes driveways and roads safe for motor vehicles. Some buyers, however, need decorative materials for landscapes, benches, and home products. These clients should look for wholesale companies that sell aggregate products. Aggregate mixes include a variety of stones and polished rocks that can add beauty to landscapes and decorative products. Many gravel wholesale producers also sell materials that their customers need to use their products safely. They might, for instance, sell fine grain sand that construction companies can use to create level surfaces before applying gravel. They might also sell sand, cement, and adhesives that make the rocks more useful. Without these products, the gravel would be little more than pieces of rock. With other supplies, though, the gravel can serve a variety of industrial and construction purposes. You can learn more about gravel wholesale companies by accessing their websites. The companies offer discounted prices to those who purchase bulk orders. The amount that you save, however, often depends on the amount that you buy. Compare the prices and materials to help you choose a wholesale company that meets your needs best.
