Greenhouse Terms to Know

Building a greenhouse for your garden will ensure a constant supply of fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers for your home. However, as with any first time venture into gardening and horticulture, the terminology can be overwhelming. There are many commercial markets to supply a greenhouse, but before you start buying materials you must understand how a greenhouse works. Below are some common popular terms that are associated with greenhouses that can help a beginner.

  • Glaze – This term is used for the covering of a greenhouse. Since a greenhouse is traditionally heated by solar energy, the glaze needs to be a material the sunlight can pass through. Popular types of glazes are glass, polycarbonate (PVC), fiberglass and acrylics. The plastic types of glazes, such as PVC, usually have a shorter lifetime, between ten to twenty years. Glass does last longer unless you live in an area that receives a good deal of hail, in which case the glass can become easily damaged.
  • Thermal Mass – In greenhouse terminology this refers to the ability of the greenhouse to keep the plants warm at night. Many greenhouses use large buckets of water, which retain solar heat quite well, to keep the plants warm at night.
  • Misters – Another problem greenhouses could have is too much heat, as once the temperatures rise of 95 degrees Fahrenheit they have trouble growing. A mister is a system that periodically sprays mist into the greenhouse, keeping it cooler and providing a comfortable home for your plants.
  • Fertilizers – Additives that can help a plant grow. They can be organic, such as manure, or they can be chemically manufactured. There are many commercial stores that sell fertilizers.

Greenhouse equipment and supplies are used by countless people across the country. In fact, both individual homeowners and businesses alike utilize all sorts of garden fertilizers, plant covers, mulch products, pesticides, and tools on a regular basis. Retailers like nurseries and home garden centers supply most people with an array of flower pots, horticulture equipment, water misting systems, and thermostats for greenhouse environments. Regardless of where you reside in the United States, there is likely to be a garden supply center in your area. When it comes to greenhouse equipment and horticulture supplies, more and more is made available all the time. This is essentially to meet most any and every needs. While one residential homeowner may require a certain light to help his/her plants grow, another person may need a heating vent for their greenhouse. Fortunately there are garden supply company locations that offer anything from wholesale fertilizers and flower bed protection covers to garden pesticides and various horticulture tools. Since this is a very diverse market, new fertilizers, pesticides and mulch products are being developed all the time. Some individuals use these products for residential home lawns and gardens, while other people use greenhouse equipment for commercial business lots and landscaping. You can learn more about greenhouse equipment, nursery locations, and garden supplies just by speaking with local nurseries and home improvement stores. These professionals can offer you some insight regarding specific horticulture supplies, garden tools, and thermostat products. It is wise to keep in mind which specific products you are interested in, while speaking with them.
