Grocery Store Terminology for Everyone in the Family
In most American families, both the mother and father work full time and finding time for shopping at the supermarket is somewhat challenging. This go-go mentality means that everyone in the family has to be comfortable shopping for food at the grocery store, clipping coupons and preparing meals. If you're still on shaky ground when it comes to the supermarket, here are some terms retailers use that you should be familiar with.
Bulk Foods - These are foods that are not pre-packaged in individual containers, but are sold loose, by the pound. Retailers save money by not having to pay for packaging and pass those savings along to consumers.
Extreme Couponer - A very small, but active, group of hardcore coupon users who maximize every in-store sale and manufacturers coupon. They are known for getting hundreds of dollars worth of groceries for one or two dollars.
Gourmet - This term can be misleading because is has no legal definition. But, generally, it refers to high quality, high priced food.
Health Food - Another confusing term with no legal definition. It normally refers to food products that are prepared with natural ingredients that maximize the food's health benefits.
Kosher - Food prepared in accordance with traditional Jewish customs. Many non-Jews favor Kosher foods because the practice emphasizes cleanliness and the humane treatment of animals.
Organic - Foods in this category are grown or raised without the use of artificial pesticides or fertilizers. There is a formal "organic" label, but anyone can still call anything "organic" if they so desire.
Finding the perfect supermarket or grocery store can be a difficult task. Large retail stores are often too impersonal. And small mom-and-pop shops rarely have gourmet products or great discounts. But, with a little work, you should be able to find a grocery store that's perfect for you!
Selection is important, and you'll want to make sure that any shop or store you visit has plenty of fresh food. Check to see if it has a bakery where you can buy a loaf of bread or two. And check to see if it has a deli where you can buy kosher meat and cold cuts. You'll want to see an extensive selection of dairy products, as well as a decent amount of healthy and organic foods. You'll also want to make sure that the store or shop carries your favorite diet soda or specialty beverage. Finally, make sure it also has a steady supply of toiletries and other non-food items.
Once you've found a supermarket with a great selection, you'll want to make sure it has great prices too. Some grocers give their customers great discounts if they buy in bulk, direct from the manufacturer, or wholesale. Others give their customers frequent coupons. Some grocers have even begun putting their coupons online, so customers can peruse and print them without ever stepping outside their homes.
Once you've found a supermarket with a great selection and great prices, you know you've really hit upon something great. Make this retailer your go-source for fresh food, beverages, and other household items.
