Important Gun Safety and Marksmanship Terms

A wide variety of classes and courses are available for learning about gun safety and marksmanship. Whether a novice or a highly experienced shooter, many firearms enthusiasts find instruction to be useful. Knowing key terms can assist students in selecting an appropriate course for their interests.

  • RSO - Range safety officer. A staff member or volunteer in charge of ensuring that shooters on a range are adhering to safety standards and range policies.
  • Hot - A firearm or range which may be in active use. A loaded weapon is considered hot, at a range during the times that shooters are actively handling guns.
  • Cold - A firearm or range which is not in active use. The only time when it is safe to go down range for changing targets or for any other reason is when the range is declared cold.
  • CCW - Carrying a concealed weapon, also called concealed carry. Different states have difference licensing requirements for a CCW permit.
  • Personal Protection in the Home - A common type of course describing safe storage and handling of firearms in a home environment. Many newer shooters find a course of this nature to be very useful.
  • Personal Protection Outside the Home - A common type of course describing carrying and handling of firearms in public environments. Some states require instruction of this nature before issuing a CCW permit.
  • Hunting Safety - A course addressing safety protocols and local regulations for hunters. Some states require that hunters attend a class of this nature before issuing a hunting permit.
  • Marksmanship - Many classes are offered for improving marksmanship. Classes may be geared toward rifles or handguns. Some may also cover techniques for improving speed on drawing and reloading in addition to techniques for improving aim and control while shooting.

Gun instruction classes provide safety training that should help individuals fire their ammunition precisely. Regardless of whether you want to use your gun for hunting, self defense, or sport, many of these classes can provide the training that you need to use different types of firearms. Many gun instruction and safety training classes take place at indoor and outdoor gun ranges. This gives the instructor enough room to teach students how to grip the handle properly and aim at a specific target. They can also use these spaces to help students learn how to point their barrels and differentiate between the reactions that they will get from pistols and rifles. Some of the classes even have courses that are designed to teach students how to use self defense tactics. The army uses these courses to train soldiers before they go into war, but individuals can also use these types of courses to teach them how to hone their reflexes. Chances are that the gun instruction class will ask you to do more than learn how to control your weapon as you shoot at targets and defend yourself. You will also need to learn about gun law and safety. This includes learning about the different parts of the barrel, grip, trigger, and shells. The academy might provide a study manual that helps you learn about the different gun control laws that affect your area. Manuals should include chapters that will teach you to protect yourself and others, participate in shooting sports, and hunt without breaking the law.
