Important Gymnastic Instruction Terms

Gymnastics is a very technical sport. When athletes compete at any level, they are judged against a standard of perfection. Gymnastics lessons include athletic training as well as rhythmic preparation. Girls train so hard at this sport that they often attend intensive camps to help improve their technique. One part dance, one part acrobatics, gymnastics requires a large degree of technical know how for anyone to instruct an athlete in this sport. Whether your kids plan to attend a gymnastics academy or simply test out a few lessons at a local center, it helps to speak the lingo. You can start with these five important terms used in gymnastic class.

  • Tumbling - Full body flips and rolls standard in many gymnastic routines. Teachers instruct girls to begin by practicing in a studio or on a cushioned floor. Before tumbling is mastered, a coach may help a junior gymnast by supporting some of the students body weight.
  • Cheerleader - A type of competitive acrobat who leads a crowd in support of another team at an athletic event. Cheerleading is popular in American high schools and colleges. Competitive meets are held for cheerleading just as in the type of gymnastics typical of the Olympics.
  • Training Camp - An intensive week or summer long class that trains children and teens in competitive gymnastics.
  • Rhythmic Routine - A special type of gymnastic routine performed on a hard floor. Rhythmic routines are similar to dance in that they require musical consideration. Unlike dancers, rhythmic gymnasts are also expected to perform acrobatic moves such as tumbles and flips.
  • Uneven Bars - Gymnastic tool used for performing flips. They are a popular Olympic event.

    Gymnasts learn their craft through gymnastics instructions. These can take the form of group or private lessons geared to teaching students physical fitness through jumps, twists, and tumbling. It also teaches the basics of balance, along with discipline. Gymnastics can combine rhythmic dance, cheerleading, and acrobatics, depending on the lesson and program. Many young girls take gymnastics, although the sport is certainly popular with boys as well. Many gyms also offer men's and women's classes too. In fact, many gymnastics centers are hubs of competition, where students are constantly training for meets, learning not only the basics but also extras like rhythmic dance and cheerleading. Gymnastic instructions or classes, which help people learn how to perfect the sport of gymnastics, are led by qualified coaches. Gymnastics relies on lots of flexibility on the gym floor, involving physical exercises that develop and display agility, balance, and upper and lower body strength. Lessons can target beginners, offering simple tumbling instruction, along with forward rolls and cartwheels. As kids get older, they experiment more with jumping, balancing, vaulting, and flipping. Instructors usually place a large emphasis on safety, especially while on the balance bars and trampoline. Many private clubs, studios, schools and academy institutions offer gymnastics lessons, but many recreation department clubs and gyms offer public lessons for kids and adults of all ages. Coasts vary by program, depending on the student's age and ability. Juniors can also take gymnastics camps during the summer to further hone their skills on the gym floor. A visit to your town's recreation department can yield results as to area gymnastics camps and programs. Check online for listings of studios near you for private and group lessons. If you or your child is serious about making it to the Olympics someday, consider training-intensive private lessons.
