Important Terms about Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are common beauty enhancements. From blondes to those with jet black hair, nearly anyone can benefit from extensions. If you’re new to them it’s likely that you’re confused by the terminology so often used. Here we’ll define some key terms used in this area.

  • Hair Extensions – Lengths of hair attached to one’s existing hair, usually for cosmetic reasons. They should not be confused with wigs, which are hairpieces that fit over one’s head. Extensions can be made of either human or synthetic hair, and are applied with a variety of methods. Fusion hair extensions, often attached with adhesives and a heating tool, are the most popular type, but they can be expensive. Clip-on extensions, which typically aren't intended to be worn continuously, offer a cheaper alternative.
  • Weave – This can refer either to the process by which extensions are sewn into hair usually tightly braided or it can refer to the extensions themselves. Weaves can use either human or synthetic hair.
  • Remy Hair – Derived from the French word “remis,” this is considered the highest quality type of human hair extensions available. Often imported from India, it is valued for its natural look, which is achieved by carefully gathering its strands so the cuticles remain intact and lie in one direction.
  • Cuticle – The hard outer layer of hair that protects its softer interior. The proper arrangement of cuticles in extensions can prevent tangles.
  • Virgin Hair – Human hair that has never been subjected to potentially damaging treatment, such as dyeing. Used in wigs as well as extensions, it can command premium prices.
  • Clip – Small devices used to attach extensions; they are designed to be unnoticeable and can usually be removed easily.

    Hair extensions are often used by women that wish to have longer hair, or simply want a longer hair style for a specific event or occasion. As you likely know, these extensions are typically made from real human hair or synthetic materials, and cannot be distinguished from the individual’s hair. Generally they are clipped or weaved into the person’s real hair. Many professional salons provide hair extensions and weaves these days. Some women prefer these extensions as opposed to wigs, simply because they stay in, and look more authentic. Long, medium length, and short hair extensions are available in salons, as well as some retail stores. These wig or weave products scan be acquired in various hair colors, and even with highlights. While some extensions are braids, others are custom bangs that must be put on in a salon. As you may have guessed, natural human hair extensions can look excellent, as long as they are applied correctly. In fact, some beauty salons can even match the curly or straight weaves to your exact hair color. This is typically not cheap, but the fusion of hair does look real. Many style experts and salons also provide synthetic eyelash extensions. These can also come in shades like black, brown, blonde, and red. You can learn plenty about human and synthetic hair extensions, wigs, and clip on highlights by speaking with a stylist at a salon in your town or city. Be sure to ask specific questions about hair colors and highlight options as well.
