Hardware Store Terminology for Beginning Handymen

Given the current economic condition in most American households, it's not surprising that more and more people are taking on home improvement projects themselves. But even simple tasks like replacing the hardware on kitchen cabinetry or putting in a new door can be very challenging for beginners. You not only need the right tools, you need to know how to use them. And, oftentimes, going to the hardware store or other retail outlet can only add to the confusion when the clerk starts speaking in home repair jargon. If you're a beginning handyman, you'll want to learn the following commonly used home design and construction terms.

  • Framing - The wood elements used in the construction of a home. When a real estate agent refers to a home as having "good bones" this is what they are talking about.
  • Mill Works - This term refers to pre-made wood products like doors and kitchen cabinets. Wood flooring, however, is generally kept in a different department at most retail outlets.
  • Plumb - This term has a few different meanings in the world of home repair and tools. It can be the vertical version of level, or it can refer to plumbing equipment.
  • Primer - A paint like substance that is applied to a fence or wall before the actual paint is put on. Primer helps keep the paint from getting absorbed into the surface of whatever is being painted.
  • Sheet Rock - Sometimes called "drywall" these slabs of gypsum rock are the core of almost every wall in most homes. They are normally painted or covered with paneling.
  • Studs - These are the wood pieces of framing that are covered with drywall. Because drywall is not strong enough to be hit with a hammer, any nails driven into a wall should be driven into the studs.

Whether you need to replace your kitchen cabinets, or complete any number of restoration projects, these retailers provide the knowledge and tools necessary to accomplish many tasks. Professionals and amateur remodelers equally rely on these shops to help them renovate, improve and restore their residences or businesses. Hardware retailers supply a wide range of tools for individuals and contracting companies. For instance, hammers, wrenches, nails and screws are regularly carried at these stores. In addition, stores will often carry wood, metal, stone and plastic materials. These materials are regularly used in a wide range of building and design projects. Other common materials include drills, painting materials and glue. A handyman regularly depends on these items to repair a wide range of doors and fixtures. Most stores provide important information about their products and services online. Construction workers and homeowners can regularly check their local hardware store’s website for product availability. Some shops may also allow their customers to order parts and tools directly from their website. In addition, most store websites typically contain other important facts and information such as their hours of operation, contact information and location details. In general, it is typically a good idea to speak directly with a member of a store’s sales staff in order to confirm that the products you need are currently in stock. From assembling new kitchen cabinets, to installing new doorways, hardware stores are essential to helping individuals obtain the products they need to accomplish their goals.
