Common Terms Related to Poultry Hatcheries

For many it is a common way of life to raise backyard chickens and other types of fowl such as ducks and even turkeys. They can be raised as pets or for their eggs. In some cases they are even raised as food to eat. If you are interested in raising chickens, the below glossary should provide a basic introduction to poultry care.

  • Fowl - A broad term used for domesticated birds. Chickens and turkeys are often called poultry, while ducks and geese are often termed waterfowl.
  • Bantam Breed – A smaller type of chicken. Bantams are usually a fourth to a half the size of a regular chicken. These breeds are often used as pets or for egg laying, while the larger breeds are generally kept for their meat.
  • Incubator – A machine that is used for keeping the eggs warm until the chicks hatch. The eggs need to stay in the incubator for at least 21 days, or until they start to hatch. Be careful to turn the eggs at least three times a day like a mother hen would to ensure that the chicks will not become deformed.
  • Chick Brooder – When the chicks are still small and covered with down, they need to be kept safe and warm. A chicken brooder is a small area, even a cardboard box will do, where the chicks can live until they get big enough to start acquiring feathers and move outside. They will need to be kept warm.
  • Chicken Coop – An outdoor cage for chickens. It will need to be of a sturdy construction to keep predators out. It should have a small house for the chickens to nest during the night and adequate area for them to explore during the day. These can be bought at the store or constructed.

A poultry hatchery is a place where chicken, turkey and other fowl eggs are hatched. Poultry can include chicken, turkey, ducklings, chicks or hens. Poultry can also include pheasants, geese and other birds. Poultry hatcheries breed, store and harvest poultry eggs. Many poultry hatcheries sell poultry of all kinds; they sell to private owners for stocking their farms. Look online or in a directory to contact a local poultry hatchery in your area. Poultry hatcheries, also known as poultry farms, provide food for poultry. This helps them grow properly in a healthy and clean environment. If you are interested in finding out more information about poultry farming, then do some online research. You can also research the process that is involved in producing, breeding and raising fowl eggs. Some hatcheries specialize in raising poultry for food, while other specialize in selling meat to farms and poultry distributors. Still others breed poultry to boost endangered species levels. If you are interested in getting involved in this industry, then do some research about the two types of fowl: game fowl and land fowl. Contact poultry hatcheries directly for more information about the process, products and the end result.
