Important Hay and Alfalfa Terms

Hay farmers grow a variety of hay types for the agriculture and farm animal industries. If you are looking to buy bales of hay for horses, cattle, or other animals, here are some important terms to know about ahead of time.

  • Hay Supplier - Hay suppliers are companies that manufacture, process and bale hay for sale throughout the agricultural industry.
  • Straw - Straw is not technically hay, as it it merely the byproduct of a harvested plant. These straw pieces are often used to supplement animal feed with roughage and filler, in addition to bedding for certain animals.
  • Forage - Forage is the plant byproduct, such as straw and leaves, that is eaten by cattle and horses directly from the harvested field.
  • Legume Hay - Legume hay is generally any type of hay that contains higher protein and lower roughage than grass hays.
  • Alfalfa Hay - Alfalfa hay is a type of legume hay that is known for its fiber and protein. It is popular for feeding performance horses, dairy cows, goats and sheep.
  • Grass Hay - Grass hay is any type of organic or inorganic sprout that's used primarily for fiber, and not necessarily for protein. Grass hays can be mixed with legume hays and oats for quality animal feed.
  • Timothy Hay - Timothy hay is a type of grass hay that grows best in cooler climates. Sales of timothy hay is best in the autumn.
  • Blue Grass Hay - This hay is the highest quality of grass hays, and is used for domestic and export dairy and beef cows.

Hay and alfalfa wholesale distributors can give you access to all of the baled feed that you need for your horses, cows, and other animals. You can find many suppliers listed in the online directory, which makes it difficult for some people to determine which feed dealer is right for them. If you follow these guidelines, though, you should be able to determine which hay and alfalfa wholesalers have the organic baled feed that you need for your horses. When you contact the suppliers, you should ask them how long they have been in the baled hay and alfalfa industry. If they have been in business for several years, then they should have access to farms that have a lot of experience growing the best products. Ask them if they have an online catalog so that you can look at all of the products that they have for sale. You will want to find one that not only offers cube bales of hay and alfalfa, but supplement tablets, straw, hay, grass, sprouts, tea, seeds, and juice. If you need equipment like pitchforks to help you spread the cubed bales around, then you should be sure they have these in stock. A big advantage of using a wholesale company is that they can give you price discounts for your bulk orders. Ask the dealers to give you price quotes that include your discount and any fees for services like delivery to help you determine which ones have the best products at the lowest prices.
