The following terms may help you understand how best to use these programs to stay in shape:

  • Fitness: Many factors contribute to good physical fitness. Some of the most important aspects of fitness are proper exercise, nutrition, and plenty of rest and sleep.
  • Muscle: Muscles are bands of tissues that produce movement in the body. There are many muscles in your body, so it’s important to know which group you want to exercise before starting.
  • Amenities: A gym amenity is any extra feature apart from basic machines and free weights, such as a racquetball court, pool, or sauna.
  • Pilates: A conditioning routine that focuses on exercising a few muscle groups in order to promote strength and endurance based on 6 principles.
  • Diet: The total food consumed by someone routinely. Sticking to certain diets can help a person lose weight or build muscle.
  • BMI: Body Mass Index – a formula developed to determine if a person is underweight, of a healthy weight, or overweight based on his or her height.
  • Cardio: Cardiovascular - or cardio - workouts are meant to increase endurance. Treadmills and stationary bikes are usually used for cardio.
  • Aerobic: An aerobic exercise is a low-intensity workout that is performed over a significant length of time.
  • Dehydration: The loss of a large amount of water from the body. It’s important to drink water or other restorative fluids while exercising; otherwise, you may become dehydrated, experience wooziness and possibly pass out.
  • Pulled Muscle: A tear of the muscle fibers as a result of overstretching. It is important to properly stretch the muscle group you are working, otherwise you may injure it.
