In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the health and nutrition consulting world, it is important to understand the terminology associated with it. Below are several terms to be familiar with when researching health and nutrition consultants.

  • Holistic - The term holistic refers to identifying with principles of holism in a system of therapeutics, especially one considered outside the mainstream of scientific medicine, as naturopathy or chiropractic, and usually involving nutritional measures.
  • Dietary Supplement - A supplement is a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids, that may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantities in a person's diet. Nutritionists and dieticians might incorporate supplements into tailored recipes for their individual clients.
  • Nutritionist - A nutritionist is a person who advises on matters of food and nutrition, calorie intact, diet, and impacts on health. Depending upon the jurisdiction, one who claims the title of nutritionist may or may not be required to fulfill certain regulatory standards and qualifications.
  • Dietician - Dietitians supervise the recipes, preparation and service of food, develop modified diets, participate in research, and educate individuals and groups on good nutritional habits. The goals of dietitians are to provide medical nutritional intervention, and to obtain, safely prepare, serve and advise on flavorsome, attractive, and nutritious food for adults, children, patients, groups and communities. Dieticians by definition are usually registered nutrition professionals who have obtained specified educational credentials and other professional requirements.

They may first require a physical exam before beginning treatment.
