Key Terms for Health Care Facilities

Health care is a complicated system, often involving many types of facilities and care providers. Knowing some of the key terms in the health care field can make it easier to navigate and select the best facility for your needs.

  • Primary Care Provider - The first health care provider that a person sees for annual exams. Many of these doctors work in practices with other primary care providers.
  • Secondary Care Provider - The second health care provider that a person sees, often through a referral from their first care provider. Secondary care providers often work in hospitals, or specialized care centers.
  • Urgent Care Clinic - A small clinic, often available to walk in patients. These facilities usually keep regular business hours, and are appropriate for immediate visits about sudden illness or injury when a patient's regular primary care provider is unavailable.
  • Hospital - Large medical center available for more involved health care. Surgery and other advanced care generally occurs at this type of facility. They are staffed by specialists and a complete nursing crew for 24 hour monitoring and care.
  • Medical Specialist Center - A facility devoted to a specialized medical practice. Doctors working in the same field, such as orthopedics, may share a facility and specialized equipment.
  • Nursing Home - A facility for long term care for elderly people. Nurses assist patients with maintaining correct medication schedules, diets, and other needs.
  • Hospice Care - A type of care available to terminally ill patients that addresses physical health care needs, as well as spiritual and emotional. Hospice care providers may work at hospitals, nursing homes, or in patients' homes.

Health care facilities are located all over the globe. These medical facilities are essentially state hospitals, private clinics, and urgent care centers that provide long term and short term health care assistance. Most people seek out physical or mental assistance, and provide their health care insurance information in order to handle most of the fees. There are hundreds of major hospitals, assisted living community locations, and even small clinics that deal with behavioral analysis issues. Health care facilities provide professional care and medical attention to individuals with different needs. Regardless of the town or city you reside in, there is likely a local doctor’s office, state hospital, or medical clinic nearby. Many areas also have rest homes for the elderly, as well as convalescent centers with nursing professionals on staff to help people recover from certain operations or illnesses. Typically all of these health care facility locations allow visitors during certain hours. However, not all hospitals and medical clinics provide long term care. Furthermore, the cost of one health care facility will vary from another. This price is determined by the comfort level the facility provides, as well as the location, the doctors it has on staff, and the degree of medical treatments that are provided. If you are interested in obtaining more information and details regarding health care facilities, large hospitals, and medical centers, you should get in touch with your family doctor or physician. He or she can assist you with this information. However, you can also do a little online research to learn more.
