Health care is a complicated system, often involving many types of facilities and care providers. Knowing some of the key terms in the health care field can make it easier to navigate and select the best facility for your needs.

  • Primary Care Provider - The first health care provider that a person sees for annual exams. Many of these doctors work in practices with other primary care providers.
  • Secondary Care Provider - The second health care provider that a person sees, often through a referral from their first care provider. Secondary care providers often work in hospitals, or specialized care centers.
  • Urgent Care Clinic - A small clinic, often available to walk in patients. These facilities usually keep regular business hours, and are appropriate for immediate visits about sudden illness or injury when a patient's regular primary care provider is unavailable.
  • Hospital - Large medical center available for more involved health care. Surgery and other advanced care generally occurs at this type of facility. They are staffed by specialists and a complete nursing crew for 24 hour monitoring and care.
  • Medical Specialist Center - A facility devoted to a specialized medical practice. Doctors working in the same field, such as orthopedics, may share a facility and specialized equipment.
  • Nursing Home - A facility for long term care for elderly people. Nurses assist patients with maintaining correct medication schedules, diets, and other needs.
  • Hospice Care - A type of care available to terminally ill patients that addresses physical health care needs, as well as spiritual and emotional. Hospice care providers may work at hospitals, nursing homes, or in patients' homes.
