Important Terms about Health Clubs

Many people who want to improve their physical fitness decide to join a health club. A typical club sports a wide range of equipment, including weights and treadmills, to help members achieve their goals. If you’ve never belonged to a health club, you may be unfamiliar with the terminology you may encounter, so below we’ll define certain words often used in the industry.

  • Gym – The most commonly used term for a health club. Aside from a variety of weights and other athletic equipment, gyms often have areas where one can play sports such as basketball and racquetball. Also called a fitness center.
  • Pilates – A physical fitness system that involves a series of exercises intended to improve flexibility, strength, and endurance. It is usually performed on a mat, sometimes with the aid of props such as exercise balls. The system is named after its inventor, Joseph Pilates.
  • Yoga – An exercise system that originated in India, whose purpose is to promote greater control over the body and mind. Its practitioners often credit it with relieving stress and increasing physical flexibility, among other benefits. Although yoga traditionally has a religious aspect, classes taught in gyms generally emphasize its physical health benefits.
  • Aerobics – A type of workout routine that promotes strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. This is done though a wide variety of sustained athletic exercises, often including but not restricted to jogging, swimming, and cycling.
  • Free weights – Weights, such as dumbbells and barbells, that are not attached to a weightlifting apparatus. They differ from weight machines in allowing a greater range of movement.

Health clubs give their members access to gym equipment that they can use to improve their physical health and appearance. Many health clubs also offer exercise classes and personal training services. The specific types of fitness equipment and classes that a gym provides, can differ from one location to another. You should, therefore, consider the specific types of options that an athletic club can offer before joining. Some health clubs have indoor and outdoor pools. Pools help people stay fit by participating in zero impact cardio workouts. The sports club might also use the pool to teach children and adults how to swim or dive. The pool is also often used for aquatic fitness and aerobics Many gyms have free weight sets and workout equipment that gives members the chance to participate in strength training. Some of the equipment allows members to lift weights without a spotter. In many cases, people feel that the machines offer more control than free weights. The option that you choose, however, mostly depends on your preference and ability. If you are interested in taking pilates, yoga or aerobics classes, then you will want to find a gym that offers these classes. Many gyms now offer group athletic classes to encourage their members to visit regularly. In addition to sports and workout facilities, a gym might also have a spa that can help you recover from exercise or physical condition. The spa might offer various services such as massage therapy, hot stone massage, saunas and whirlpools. You can learn more about the health clubs in your area by searching the internet and reading their websites.
