Health Service Industry Terminology

If you are thinking of getting into the health service industry, it might be helpful to learn a few key terms about the field before looking into a medical university. After you are familiar with the industry, you can decide which degree or path of study is best for you as a student of medicine.

  • Acute Care - Family doctors, medical clinics, and emergency room physicians provide acute care. This is immediate, short term care for the episodic ailments of patients.
  • Ancillary Services - Ancillary services are the supporting human resources within a hospital or medical setting. Ancillary groups provide supportive services at the home or in hospital. This includes things such as physical therapy and diet and nutrition planning.
  • Preventative Care - Regular checkups, exercise therapy, and dietary guidance are all parts of preventative care. Someone attending school for preventative care seeks to maintain health and avoid illness where possible.
  • Managed Care - If you are interested in managed care groups, a school that offers a degree in public health administration may be best. Managed care refers to the doctors, insurance companies, and board members that work to provide organized, cost effective health care.
  • Occupational Health - A student of occupational health is one who attends a university that offers courses on government regulations of employers and the health services provided to their employees.
  • Outcome Studies - Outcome studies is more of a lab based program that assesses the effectiveness of certain drugs, therapies, and treatment plans. Lab technicians, scientific researchers, and drug development are all fields within outcome studies.

The term health services covers many different private and public services, businesses and personnel that contribute to the overall well-being of a person. There are several businesses that fall under this category, like the public health department, health care insurance, medical offices, and home care. Other businesses are dental insurance plans, labs, diagnostic centers, hospitals, and mental care offices. Because there are so many different programs that fall under the umbrella of health services, the history is quite scattered. For instance, heath insurance was first offered in the 19th century in the form of accident insurance, which was very similar to today's form of disability insurance. However, as we moved into the 20th century, programs progressed to offer more coverage. Now, there are both private and public insurance plans that offer benefits to their recipients. They include coverage like medical, dental and mental health, or can provide benefits for emergency only. Plans also vary between group, work, individual or family. However, insurance is not the only important part of health services. In fact, insurance is only given its importance through the doctors and nurses that it helps pay for. Many nursing programs work both in hospitals, and providing in home care for the disabled. There are physicians that focus only on children's health, while others focus on women's medical care. Some physicians work in lab settings, doing research on human health, looking to provide aid to cancer victims. These research institutions are often funded by private charities. Whether it is a doctor writing a prescription, or the health department working with local management for restaurant codes, these services all work for the general good. Find out more about different aspects of health services by researching the topic online.
