Herb Terms to Know

Herb gardens are easy additions homes. Entire farms are dedicated to producing roots and leaves for spices or other uses. Herb use is an alternative remedy for many people. This medicinal practice is especially present in Chinese culture. Following are some terms associated with the Chinese preparation of herbs for use in a remedy.

  • Juices – Herbs with a particularly high water content can be squeezed for their juice. This extraction can be ingested or applied to the body.
  • Pastes – Pastes are created simply by smashing the herb until it reaches the desired consistency. Pastes are often applied directly to the body.
  • Decoctions – Herbs are boiled down for use.
  • Infusions – Herbs are soaked in hot or cold water until the water absorbs flavor and aroma from the herb. Teas are infusions. Many people are comfortable drinking tea, so it is a common use for herbs. Not all tea drinkers indulge for medicinal purposes, though.
  • Powders – Dried herbs are crushed into a fine powder. These powders are commonly used as spices. They can be compressed into vitamin supplements.
  • Tinctures – Tinctures are ground herbs mixed with a liquid, like alcohol or vinegar. Tinctures are for internal use.
  • Liniments – Liniments are ground herbs mixed with a liquid, like alcohol or vinegar. Liniments are for external use.
  • Salves – Salves are herbs mixed with a thicker substance, like petroleum jelly.
  • Poultices – This method of healing uses herbs as they would come from a garden or farm. They are placed directly onto an area of the body and are held there with cloth.
  • Oils – A mild oil, such as that obtained from olives or sesame seeds, is used for herbal oils. The herb is allowed to soak in the selected oil for many days before it is strained out.
