Popular Hobby and Model Construction Supply Terms

Hobby and model construction is a fun and exciting pastime. These creations require special supplies that can be obtained from hobby supply retailers. Here are some common terms associated with these suppliers.

  • Scale - This is the ratio between a model and its prototype, expressed as a ratio or fraction. Generally these are referred to by a letter of the alphabet. The two most popular are N, at a ratio of 1 to 160 and HO, at a ratio of 1 to 87. These are commonly used in trains, military models and other vessels.
  • Recovery Device - A parachute or a plastic streamer used to slow the descent of a rocket. This is used both for safety reasons and to help protect it when it lands. A brightly colored recovery device makes it easier to spot the landing area.
  • Airfoil - A part or surface, such as a wing, propeller blade, rotor blade or rudder, whose shape and orientation allows for stability, direction, lift, thrust, or propulsion. These are commonly used in the construction of toy plane.
  • Latex Rubber – This compound is liquid and viscous and is used to construct molds for landscapes and other scenes. It is applied to a mold in thin layers, with each subsequent layer being allowed to dry. After several coats, the rubber mold is ready to use.
  • Sealing Iron – This is a small, electric tool that is used to attach fabric or plastic film to toy surfaces. Military replicas frequently use this item to create a firm, drum-tight surface that is ready to paint, accessorize or add other supplies to.

Hobbies keep kids’ and adults’ minds and hands busy, providing hours of entertainment. Hobbies can range from doing puzzles and crafts to collecting stamps and putting model cars together. Trains are a popular hobby for many enthusiasts, from little ones to retirees. Knitting is another popular hobby, as is flying small scale RC planes. Retail hobby shops are good places to get started on your hobby. You can pick all the necessary supplies for building a railroad or building a toy rocket. In a retail hobby and model construction supplies shop, you can purchase paints, plastic figures, materials, wood, and glue. Many retailers also offer workshops on the weekends for hobbyists who want to learn more about their craft. Retailers buy their stock in bulk from wholesalers. They then sell to the general public. Retailers can be located online as well, offering shipping and delivery of all their in-store products. If you like to visit a hobby shop in person, head to your nearest mall or stand-alone hobby shop to pick up the kits, arts and crafts, patterns, plans, and dioramas you need. Hobby shops are great destinations for students looking to pick up items for school projects. Adults also frequent these stores to keep their hobbies going, such as stocking up on model boat building supplies, mini military figures, accessories, and model construction supplies. Model airships utilizing remote and radio controls first made an appearance in the 1800s. They were made by hand out of balsa wood. When interchangeable, customized parts became available, kits surged in popularity. These provided a bit of originality for the hobbyist who could pick and choose the type of RC airplane or other aircraft he wanted. Today, models for ships, planes, and cars are typically made out of plastics in varying strengths.
