Hockey Equipment Terms to Know

Hockey is a sport that is primarily played in the wintertime in icy areas of the country, due to the fact that it is played on a type of ice skates. It is a very physical game and usually played by men, though there are women leagues for hockey as well. Due to it being such a physical sport, proper safety gear is required. Below are some terms commonly used for hockey equipment.

  • Hockey Skates – These are ice skates that have strong support around the ankles. Since hockey is played on ice, it is necessary that every player purchase or rent a pair of ice skates.
  • Puck – A small round disk that is hit from side of the hockey field to the other. In the game of hockey, once the puck goes into the goal, a point is scored. The puck is lightweight and can travel at very fast speeds along the ice.
  • Hockey Stick – A long stick with a flat end that is used to hit the puck. The hockey stick is sturdily made, but it is often reinforced with grip tape. It's flat end allows for it to be dragged along the ice.
  • Protective Gear – Safety equipment required for a hockey game. For basic players it includes a helmet, pads and gloves. For the goalie, thicker gear is used. A goalie must wear a helmet as well as a mask to protect their face from the puck and hockey sticks. They also have to use extensive padding along their legs, arms and chest.
  • Jerseys – The team uniform that is worn on the outside of the protective gear. From youth leagues to professional hockey, the jersey will include the colors and name of the team, as well as give each individual player a number.

Hockey rinks can be found at high schools, colleges, and arenas. Teams can reserve ice time for practice and games. Hockey itself has been around for many years, but ice hockey is thought to have developed in colder climates like Nova Scotia and Canada, when field hockey was played on ice with sticks and pads for the first time just a couple of hundred years ago.
