Horse Breeder Terminology

Horse breeding is the reproduction of horses through selective breeding. Purebreds and other equines are bred to often be sold for a profit. Unique breeds of horses, such as a pony or miniature horse, will generally greatly differ in price from normal sized equines. Other horses, like a thoroughbred from champion lines can command prices that are much higher than other livestock. Listed below are some popular terms used to breed and to sale a horse.

  • Horse Breeds – Like other domesticated animals, horses have been breed to do different types of work. For example, the quarter horse is a breed of horse that is often used for herding. It gets its name from its supposed ability to be able to turn on a quarter. Another breed, the Thoroughbred, has been bred for racing.
  • Stallion – A male horse of breeding age. In a horse’s lineage, the stallion father is referred to as the sire of the horse.
  • Mare – A female horse of breeding age. In a horse’s lineage, the mare mother is referred to as the dam of the horse.
  • Filly – A young female horse. Horses are typically called fillies up until their second or third year of age.
  • Colt – A young male horse. Horses are typically called colts until they reach about their second or third year, when they become sexually mature.
  • Pony – A miniature horse that is less than 14 hands high. Some ponies are quite tall, while others, such as the Shetland pony, are very short and stout animals.
  • Stud Farm – An equine ranch while stallions are kept for stud service. Mares are brought to the stud farm to be impregnated by the stallions there for a fee. Fees can vary greatly depending on the lineage of the stallion. Horse sales take place at livestock auctions.

Horse breeders are professionals that typically run equine farms in order to raise all kinds of mares and stallions. This is a very big business in the United States, and breeders can make a great deal of money on thoroughbred horses. It is common for these experts to raise purebred foals, and then sell them to individuals after they are grown. While some people want a horse for race events, others simply want a stud or filly to ride on an equestrian property or ranch. When breeders make sales, the purchaser typically receives a registered horse with papers included. There are many different types and breeds of horses. Some of these are Arabian warmblood, American paint horse, and palomino. A colt is a young male horse, a dam is the mother, and a sire is the father. Sometimes the sperm is taken from a purebred male in order to create a specific foal or baby horse. There are also quarter horses that are raised by breeders, and they are known for their sprinting ability. Depending on what a mare or stallion pony is used for, and whether or not it will be used in show, the cost of the animal can vary greatly. This is because different blood lines and breeds are more rare than others. If there are any horse breeding farms in your area, you can get in touch with them to learn more specifics and details about this equine business. Be sure to make any inquiries you need to about thoroughbred foals, purebred sales, and palomino filly ponies.
