Horse Breeder Terminology

Horse breeding is the reproduction of horses through selective breeding. Purebreds and other equines are bred to often be sold for a profit. Unique breeds of horses, such as a pony or miniature horse, will generally greatly differ in price from normal sized equines. Other horses, like a thoroughbred from champion lines can command prices that are much higher than other livestock. Listed below are some popular terms used to breed and to sale a horse.

  • Horse Breeds – Like other domesticated animals, horses have been breed to do different types of work. For example, the quarter horse is a breed of horse that is often used for herding. It gets its name from its supposed ability to be able to turn on a quarter. Another breed, the Thoroughbred, has been bred for racing.
  • Stallion – A male horse of breeding age. In a horse’s lineage, the stallion father is referred to as the sire of the horse.
  • Mare – A female horse of breeding age. In a horse’s lineage, the mare mother is referred to as the dam of the horse.
  • Filly – A young female horse. Horses are typically called fillies up until their second or third year of age.
  • Colt – A young male horse. Horses are typically called colts until they reach about their second or third year, when they become sexually mature.
  • Pony – A miniature horse that is less than 14 hands high. Some ponies are quite tall, while others, such as the Shetland pony, are very short and stout animals.
  • Stud Farm – An equine ranch while stallions are kept for stud service. Mares are brought to the stud farm to be impregnated by the stallions there for a fee. Fees can vary greatly depending on the lineage of the stallion. Horse sales take place at livestock auctions.
