Popular Terms Defined for Horseback Riding & Rentals

Many stables offer horseback riding rentals that can teach beginners how to ride horses and give intermediate riders the opportunity to master their skills. Some of the stables might even have ranches or camps that offer classes on different types of riding styles. Before you rent a horse or sign up for a ranch camp, you should learn a few key terms that will help you better understand the services that a stable offers.

  • Western Saddles – Unless you plan to ride bareback, which many people find difficult, you will need to know about the two major saddle designs that the average stable will offer. Western saddles have a horn at the front. This horn is useful for gripping. Since these saddles were designed for life on the ranch, the horns are also useful for keeping ropes steady when leaning cattle.
  • English Saddles – English saddles have more recreational uses than Western saddles. You won’t typically find them on a farm, but you can use them on a variety of trails and courses. These saddles do not have horns and have been designed to give the horse a full range of motion. That makes these designs useful for anyone taking jumping lessons. They are also typically used during most horseshows, but you won’t find them at a rodeo.
  • Haute Ecole – In French, this phrase means “high school.” In the horseback riding world, though, it refers to skills that experts use when showing off their horses in demonstrations. You can take classes in haute ecole, but you probably won’t use the skills while riding a horse on a trail or even in competitions.

Horseback riding is a fun activity for both adults and children alike. It can be enjoyed as a hobby through lessons, as a an equestrian sport, or rented on vacation. Depending on what type of activity you are looking for, horseback riding can be fun for anyone in your family.

If you or your child are interested in horseback riding lessons, look to find various ranches that have stables in your area. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or expert, there will be lessons and horses for your skill level. You will train to learn all the techniques to ride, including how to put a saddle on, how to pull on the reins, and how to ride properly. You can even learn to compete in either English or Western style tournaments.

However, if you or your child want a more relaxed approach to horseback riding, consider going to a summer camp that offers horse and pony lessons or a resort dude ranch for adult style fun. This can give you a fun opportunity to rent a horse while on vacation to enjoy the trails and the great outdoors. Many people like this style of vacation because it allows them to truly escape the hustle of everyday life.

If you are interested in pursing horseback riding lessons, go online to do some research about the topic. Access your favorite search engine and type in related keywords such as horseback riding, dude ranch, horse leases, and bombproof horses. It is a good idea to learn more about the topic and what is involved before starting a new hobby.
