  • Western Saddles – Unless you plan to ride bareback, which many people find difficult, you will need to know about the two major saddle designs that the average stable will offer. Western saddles have a horn at the front. This horn is useful for gripping. Since these saddles were designed for life on the ranch, the horns are also useful for keeping ropes steady when leaning cattle.
  • English Saddles – English saddles have more recreational uses than Western saddles. You won’t typically find them on a farm, but you can use them on a variety of trails and courses. These saddles do not have horns and have been designed to give the horse a full range of motion. That makes these designs useful for anyone taking jumping lessons. They are also typically used during most horseshows, but you won’t find them at a rodeo.
  • Haute Ecole – In French, this phrase means “high school.” In the horseback riding world, though, it refers to skills that experts use when showing off their horses in demonstrations. You can take classes in haute ecole, but you probably won’t use the skills while riding a horse on a trail or even in competitions.
