Hotels and Motels
Hotels are an important part of history and are recorded in Roman times; although many were private homes, resembling the establishments we might now call guest houses or bed and breakfasts. Medieval inns also offered lodgings, but they were more like hostels than modern hotels, with cheap sleeping arrangements often being communal. The first hotel in America opened in 1607. Motels are commonly seen slightly differently. The standard image of the American motel, with rooms opening to the outside and plenty of parking, is a relatively recent concept. Cottage courts, where the rooms stood alone as cottages or bungalows, appeared during the Depression and were replaced by motor courts in the forties. These motor courts became what we now think of as a motel. Hotels, motels and inns all serve the same purpose of providing lodging for travelers. Airports are commonly surrounded by a cluster of them and the airport hotel has an image of its own. Luxury hotels may exist in the heart of the city or in tourist locations such as beaches. Resorts go one step further, offering other facilities such as golf courses. More expensive hotels often offer suites with separate bedrooms rather than just rooms. City center hotels tend to offer smaller rooms. Motels offer cheaper accommodations than hotels, although some of the older mom and pop ones may provide suites. Extended stay hotels often offer all suites, with infrequent maid service. They are commonly occupied by business travelers on assignment. Though some hotels are pet friendly, they often demand an additional charge. In the modern world, there are numerous online booking services that offer deals on reservations and packages. Though most hotels expect guests to reserve rooms in advance, motels, especially budget ones, are likely to have rooms available to those who show up unexpectedly.

When you need a place to stay on vacation or on a business trip, hotels and motels are a good choice. Hotels are usually larger than motels, with several floors connected by interior stairs and elevators. Motels are smaller, usually consisting of just one or two floors connected by outdoor stairs. Doors open onto the outside, often overlooking the parking lot. Find hotels and motels in a variety of ways, such as through travel websites, directly through the establishment and from recommendations. Some hotels and motels are regional or national chains, while others are locally owned and operated. Book a stay in a hotel suite or motel by calling or going online to reserve rooms. Use search features on the internet that will pick and choose the best accommodations for you. Search by location, such as in vacation spots or by the airport. You can also search by resort amenities, such as pools and proximity to area attractions. Some motels and hotels are pet friendly, but some may not be, so be sure to check before showing traveling with your animal. There are several cheap deals to be had online. Simply be diligent in your search for anything from extended stays to corporate business trip accommodations. Rates vary by how many rooms you need, along with amenities included, and proximity to area attractions like beaches and airports. It’s important to do your research before booking hotels, motels and inns. Compare lodging by city, by accommodations such as luxury suites and by price. Types of lodging, such as inns, can range from budget friendly to high-end. There are several packages to consider for a reservation, each with its own deal. Get as informed as possible in regards to lodging in the city of your choice.
