Terms for Retail Housewares
Housewares is a common retail term for cooking and kitchen utensils. These can include common pots and pans, or more special items, like Corning ware, or fondue pots. A kitchen is often called the heart of a home, and people spend more time in their kitchens than almost any other room. Therefore, there are many products marketed as housewares. Below are some common retail terms.
Utensils – This term refers to implements used for eating, such as forks, spoons and knives. It also includes specialty items, such as soup spoons, ladles, and spatulas.
Cutlery – A subset of utensils that includes knives. There are many different kinds of knives, from common eating knives to ceramic cutting knives.
Copper Lined Pans – Most pots and pans are made out of galvanized steel. However, copper lined pots and pans include copper linings along their bottoms. Copper is a better conductor of heat than steel and allows for the contents of a pan or pot to be better heated without having to use extra power.
Spice Rack – An organizational tool that is used for holding small spice bottles. Spice racks can either be mounted on the wall, or spun in a circle.
Corning Ware – A manufacturer of plates, pots and pans that is made out of ceramic pottery lined with glass. Corning ware is safe for use in the oven and in the microwave.
Fondue – A style of cooking that involves using heating a boiling liquid. Fondue pots are usually electric, with a burner on the bottom and a pot on the top.
Airtight Canister – A storage method using airtight canisters. These are useful for perishable items that can be stored for a long time under the right conditions, such as coffee and sugar
If you just bought a new home, you probably need to get housewares and furniture. Furnishing your house can be a challenge, but if you go room by room, you can get all the products and appliances you need.
You will want to start with your bedroom, as you will need a place to sleep. You can get a matching furniture set or buy each piece separately. If you live in a studio, you may want a sleeper sofa to save space.
The next room is the kitchen or kitchenette. Your home probably comes with a sink and refrigerator, but you will need to buy other products. You will need utensils, pots and pans to eat and cook with. If you have room, you might also want a dinette set so that you have a place for dining. A dinette set usually consists of a matching table and chairs.
When it comes time for furnishing your living room, you should think about whether you want to buy your couch retail or directly from a factory or wholesale supplier. Often, you can get a discount if you buy a grouping of furniture at once, such as a couch with a matching recliner and coffee table. You may also want to look for media storage units for your television in the living room.
If your home has the space and the proper connections, you may even consider getting a washer and dryer. You can often get them new at a retail store, or even used from a discount store.
Buying housewares and furniture is a great way to add personality and style to your new home.
