Useful Hub Cap Terminology
As you likely know, hub caps are round wheel coverings that can be found on all motor vehicles around the world. These auto parts are generally made from some type of metal or plastic material. Regardless of whether you drive a sedan, pickup truck, minivan, or SUV, you may need to repair or acquire a replacement hub cap at some point. After all, sometimes these decorative disks or wheel covers get damaged or simply pop off when you are driving. Refer to the definitions below to learn more.
Center Cap – This is a decorative disk that is used to cover or conceal the central portion of an automobile wheel. Some are only a few inches in diameter, and they often hide the lug nuts on the wheel.
Wire Wheel – Often referred to as wire, spoke wheels, these automobile wheels have rims that are connected to the hubs by a series of wire spokes. They were commonly used on older motor vehicles and motorcycles from the 1950s and earlier.
Spinners – These are a modern type of hub cap that spin inside the wheel. They rotate independently and even continue to spin when the vehicle is stopped. Typically spinners function on roller bearings that separate the spinner from the actual wheel, and allow it to move freely. If the bearings come lose, repairs are often required.
Chrome Wheel Simulator – This is a chrome style steel rim that can be added to the wheels of vehicles in order to improve the appearance. These auto parts can be purchased new or used, and are much less expensive that buying high quality rims.
White Wall Tires – These are tires that were used on early automobiles. They were manufactured from natural white rubber, and carbon black rubber for the treads.
Hubcaps are a very important, if minor, part of any car or truck. Hubcaps, which are also called wheel covers, are essential in protecting the lug nuts and inner parts of the wheel. They come in several different designs; wheel covers can be used for basic necessity, or as a fashionable accessory to any car.
Hubcaps that come on a standard issue automobile are very basic. They may be made of plastic and only cover the center of the tire, or they may cover the entire surface, from wheel to rim. However, when shopping for accessories for your automobile, you can also request from the dealer that the wheel covers be upgraded.
Custom hubcaps are available, though they are more costly than standard issued ones. Some mechanics and body shops offer chrome rims, spinning hubcaps, and painted ones customized to your vehicle. Installation is fairly easy, but the mechanic will need to measure the number of inches from center to tire rim to make sure they fit correctly. A van, for instance, will have a different wheel size than a sports car.
Hubcaps on automobiles can sometimes be damaged and need to be repaired. Specialized mechanic shops can aid in the installation and repair of these, or can recommend replacement rims if they are beyond repairs. Some shops can even help their customers find used replacement caps that fit their cars.
