Common Hunting Supply Terms
Hunters need the right supplies and equipment to successfully hunt for wildlife like deer, turkeys, and ducks. Whether you are hunting for food, recreation, or trade, you will need the right equipment and accessories for that season. Hunting gear, like bows, rifles and shotguns, can be found at stores that specialize in sporting goods and outdoor activities. Outdoor enthusiasts will also be able to find fishing rods, tackle boxes, archery arrows, camping gear and scopes for shooting. Familiarize yourself with the terms listed below regarding hunting gear and outdoor supplies.
Nock – This is a small piece found on the rear end of an arrow. It is typically made from plastic, and has a groove or cut-out for the bow string to fit into. The nock is placed on the bow string each time before an arrow is shot.
Deer Scent – Commonly used by deer hunters, this is a spray or liquid that can be rubbed on the hunter’s clothing. The scent masks the smell of a human, and puts out the scent of a male or female deer, and essentially works as a lure.
Decoys – Life-like, plastic animals, such as deer, geese, ducks, or pheasants. They are placed strategically to attract prey or game.
Tree Stand – A metal device or stand that is mounted in a tree. This way a hunter can stand or sit in the tree unit in order to get a better point of view for hunting deer or other animals.
Fletching – Commonly found on archery arrows, this is the feather or synthetic material that resembles a feather. Typically three fletchings are used on each arrow, and assist by helping the arrow spin and shoot more accurately.
Hunting supplies are used for several different types of hunting and come in many different forms. They vary from camping or outdoor survival gear to guns, bows and arrows. They also vary depending on the type of game that you are hunting. For instance, when looking for fish, most individuals will use a spear or fishing rod. For deer, ducks and other game, the sportsman may use guns or rifles with different sized scopes to spot the game.
When people first began hunting game, they still lived outdoors, and needed tools to even the playing field between themselves and larger animals. They outfitted themselves with gear like a bow and arrow, a rudimentary knife, and a spear. Other early weapons included boomerangs, slings, and later on, guns. As hunting by archery is not always accurate, advances in weaponry allowed guns to become easier to shoot down fleet game like deer. Supplies designed specifically for hunting are very different from gear that has been designed for other purposes, like army uses. Some gear can also be bought from secondhand or army surplus stores including outdoor supplies, used tents, spare tackle, and clothing. As far as clothing goes, the apparel that a sportsman might need will depend on what he is using the clothing for. For instance, if he is shooting ducks in the middle of a lake, he may need waterproof boots. If they are practicing at a target range, they may just need regular shoes.
