Terms Associated with Commercial and Industrial Insulation

Insulation is an essential building material within the walls of a structure. Without insulation, heating and air conditioning systems would be significantly less effective. The following are some common terms associated with commercial and industrial insulation.

  • Blanket Insulation – This insulation is typically made from mineral wool or fiberglass. Blanket insulation is available in pre-cut segments, called batts or rolls, that are specifically sized to fit between ordinarily spaced wall studs. This insulation should be installed by a contractor during building construction.
  • Foil-faced Vapor Retarder – This is a layering of adhesive and foil-backed paper on the outside of fiberglass insulation. This helps prevent the passage of moisture into the insulating material.
  • Liquid Foam Insulation – This type of insulation is sprayed into walls as a liquid, but as it dries it expands and turns into a foamy substance. Since this kind of insulation requires special equipment, hiring a trained contractor to install it is highly recommended.
  • Loose Fill Insulation – Loose fill insulation is often a greener option for many owners of residential or commercial properties. Recycled newspaper can be turned into cellulose loose fill. This kind of insulation is great for awkwardly shaped areas. It can simply be poured into the space or, to ensure a better and more even fill, it can be sprayed in with special equipment.
  • Rigid Board – This type of insulation is commonly made from pressed plastic foam. Rigid board insulation should be installed in industrial or commercial buildings during erection. Due to its flammability, coating rigid board insulation with a nonflammable substance is highly recommended.

Insulation contractor companies often focus on residential or commercial services. Most of them use similar types of fiberglass sprays and cellulose foams to prevent heat from escaping through the roof or walls of a building. Just because they use the same types of materials, however, does not necessarily mean that they are all companies are equally adept at providing commercial, residential, and industrial services. One reason that one company may provide better service for residential or commercial customers is because the building styles differ from each other. Your home, for instance, is a relatively small area. Likewise, it has small attic, basement, and wall spaces that need insulation. Commercial and industrial spaces, however, are often very large. Big box stores, for instance, can cover acres of square footage. The amount of energy used to heat and cool these buildings makes it important for them to choose contractors who have plenty of experience with insulating sprays and foams made of materials such as polyurethane, fiberglass, and cellulose. A company that primarily focuses on residential services will also know more about the specific types of products and coatings that are most useful in houses. If you are remodeling your basement, for instance, you will need an insulation expert who knows what types of products will work most effectively on your pipes. They could even use thermal paints and other coatings that are specially designed to help your building regulate temperature. You can learn more about the construction companies that offer insulation services in your area by searching the internet for their websites. You could also look for “green” energy conservation companies that can detect leaks.
