Common Jewelry Terms and Definitions

Countless women and men appreciate different types of jewelry. This industry offers a wonderful selection of diamond engagement rings, gold necklaces, and silver earrings. While some jewelry is geared toward wedding events, other items are for anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day. As you may know, there are various precious stones and metals used in this business. While a number of wedding bands and bracelets are premade to be sold, jewelers additionally make custom pieces upon request. Below you will see some key terms and definitions that apply to this grand industry.

  • Titanium – This is a very hard, silver-gray metal that is part of the transition series. It is lightweight, strong, and corrosion resistant. Titanium is commonly used to make rings, knife handles, and various other products.
  • Engagement Ring – A ring, typically with a diamond stone, that is offered to a woman when she is asked to be married. This ring is worn until the wedding, and then a wedding band is often added to it.
  • Silver – A precious and shiny metal that is grayish-white in hue. It is commonly used to make jewelry items like necklaces, bracelets, rings, and pendants. Silver is generally not as expensive as gold or platinum.
  • Precious Stones – These are natural and rare stones, such as diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies. They are used in all sorts of jewelry items like rings, wedding bands, necklaces, and earrings. Their cost varies depending on the size of the stone, as well as its quality and clarity.
  • Platinum – This is a precious metal that is silver in hue, and has the chemical element of atomic number 78. It is used in various types of custom and commercial jewelry, and is generally more expensive than silver and gold.

Sometimes they need to be repaired or refinished a bit, but little can compare to their handmade elegance. And finally, you should remember that most women hope that their fiances will continue to occasionally buy them jewelry even after they've gotten engaged. Women love to receive watches, bracelets, and earrings from time to time. Most of them even enjoy receiving religious pendants when the occasion is appropriate. So, when you stop by a jewelry store to pick up a ring for your bride-to-be, you might also want to consider purchasing a jade necklace, or some other item of jewelry, for her too.
