Common Jewelry Casting Terms

Jewelry casting is the process of forming a piece of jewelry by pouring molten into a mold until is hardens and creates an impression. Whether someone may be looking to purchase a costume bracelet or an engagement ring, items made of metal often go through the casting process. Before this process takes place, the jewelry is designed and the metal, size and gemstones may have been determined. Jewelry comes in all forms and designs. While some pieces are attached to beads and parts of kits, others stand alone. Kits will offer the tools necessary to create a set of beads or other jewelry items at home. Items can be custom made as gifts or used as costume jewelry in theatrical performances.

  • Alloy -Alloy is a term used to describe the mixture of at least two metals.
  • Loupe - A loupe is a special magnifying glass used by jewelers to view gemstones to see flaws or blemishes.
  • Precious Metal - Precious metals are a group that includes gold, silver and platinum and valued because of their rarity and purity.
  • Mounting - Mounting is the metal frame in which a gemstone is set.
  • Ultrasonic Cleaner - An ultrasonic cleaner is a machine that cleans jewelry through vibration at a high frequency without damaging delicate stones. This machine is able to clean inside the tiny cavities in diamonds and precious metals.

Jewelry casting is the process by which necklaces, rings, bracelets and other decorative pieces are created. It is one of the first major steps in the overall creation and design process and the place where craftsmen can realize a customized design for their customers. Lost-wax casting is the most common way this process is performed. First, a wax or rubber mold is made of the piece, though sometimes the two are fused together into something called a spruce base. Then, a metal flask holding plaster is used to pour in a plaster mold. The mold is hollow when it dries. Then the melted bronze, gold, silver or platinum is poured into the hollow cast, where it is allowed to dry and is then cut out. The wax cast will vary, depending on the shape, size and design of the piece of jewelry being made. This entire process depends heavily on the tools and supplies that are used in making it. Distributors supply individual jewelers and large jewelry companies with the supplies they need to manufacture custom pieces of jewelry. Generally these tools are ordered in bulk so the company can pay bulk prices rather than retail pricing. Some of the material sold are settings, wax, carving tools and kiln safety materials. This way, jewelers have all the necessary supplies for making mountings, individual bands for wedding rings, and much more. For more information on jewelry casting materials, or on the process of lost-wax casting, do some checking online and visit the websites that contain the most relevant information to your needs.
