  • Gauge – A gauge is a unit of measurement for metal sheets or wires. Unlike most units of measurements, a larger gauge indicates a thinner material.
  • Half Hard – Half hard metal is less malleable than dead soft metal. Jewelry that requires bending but not intricate curves, such as rings, requires half hard metal.
  • Karat – Karat refers to the purity of gold. Twenty-four karat gold is pure. Regularly worn items, like wedding or engagement rings, are not often pure gold since it is softer.
  • Pattern Wire – This thicker, wider wire has patterns embedded into it. Pattern wire is commonly used in bracelet design.
  • Snap Setting – This is a setting for a cut gemstone. Unlike other settings, snap settings do not need to be folded over the edges stones. Rings and earrings can have snap settings. A properly sized snap setting would allow a diamond to be fully displayed on an engagement ring.
  • Troy Ounce – Troy ounces are traditionally used to measure precious metals.
