Jewelry Designers Terms to Know

Jewelry designing and crafting can be a difficult, complicated process. Diamonds must be painstakingly cut. Complex pendants must be meticulously shaped. Whether you are crafting homemade earrings or hiring an expert to create a custom piece, following are some terms you will want to be familiar with.

  • Anodizing – Anodizing, or coating metal with oxide, is decorative and protective. These coatings are tough, durable, and repel wear. Aluminum is commonly anodized, though this can be done to more precious metals like silver and gold.
  • Dead Soft – This refers to metal that is soft and flexible. Bracelets and necklace chains, for instance, require dead soft metal so intricate curves can be made.
  • Findings – These are used to connect parts of jewelry. Wires and beads often need findings for connection purposes. Findings can also be present for aesthetic reasons.
  • Gauge – A gauge is a unit of measurement for metal sheets or wires. Unlike most units of measurements, a larger gauge indicates a thinner material.
  • Half Hard – Half hard metal is less malleable than dead soft metal. Jewelry that requires bending but not intricate curves, such as rings, requires half hard metal.
  • Karat – Karat refers to the purity of gold. Twenty-four karat gold is pure. Regularly worn items, like wedding or engagement rings, are not often pure gold since it is softer.
  • Pattern Wire – This thicker, wider wire has patterns embedded into it. Pattern wire is commonly used in bracelet design.
  • Snap Setting – This is a setting for a cut gemstone. Unlike other settings, snap settings do not need to be folded over the edges stones. Rings and earrings can have snap settings. A properly sized snap setting would allow a diamond to be fully displayed on an engagement ring.
  • Troy Ounce – Troy ounces are traditionally used to measure precious metals.

Jewelry designers are professionals that can be found all over the world. These craftsmen are known for creating custom bridal bracelets, fine gold watches, wedding rings, and high fashion necklaces. As you may know, jewelry has been around for centuries, but it is always changing with the times. Not only are the brand names changing, but the skills of jewelers are becoming more advanced as well. With the right tools, a jewelry designer can make jewelry from almost any type of materials, including silver, white gold and platinum. There are software programs jewelers can use nowadays to assist them with handcrafted creations. It's not just about the simple tools anymore. Maybe you are in need of a simple costume bracelet or fashionable toe ring. You can have an expert design these pieces for you from the materials you prefer. There is a broad selection of jewelry created these days for both women and men alike. While someone may be looking for the perfect engagement ring with a large diamond stone setting, another individual may prefer a fine gold watch that is one of a kind. There are custom jewelers out there who can assist with both of these items and more. By visiting local jewelry stores and specialists, you can get a lot more information and details concerning fine watch collections, bridal pieces, and custom white gold bracelets. It all depends on the items you are interested in. Be sure to ask about the duration of time it takes to create a handcrafted piece, as well as the cost.
