Jewelry Repairing Terms to Know

Jewelry is a beautiful accessory, but when it is often worn it can become brittle and break. This is especially true of heirloom pieces, such as vintage and antique jewelry. However, these pieces can often be saved, salvaged and repaired by jewelry repairmen. The price will of course depend on the material being used and how much repair work must be done. Below are common terms used in jewelry repair.

  • Resetting – Used mostly with gold, silver and diamond rings, but also with some watch settings. This process removes the gemstone, such as a diamond, gem or crystal, from its old setting and places it in a new one. This is a popular choice for fine diamonds that the user wants to reset from a yellow gold into a white gold ring, or to transfer from a silver to a gold band.
  • Custom Setting – Often used with heirloom pieces, such as parts of an old necklace that a user may like to recycle the diamonds into earrings or a ring. This is similar to resetting, except in this case either the owner or the designer will make their own custom setting to house the gemstone.
  • Resizing – Used for watches, rings, necklaces and bracelets. It may involve removing or adding bands to the material. The price will vary depending on the type of precious metal used if bands are going to be added, with gold being the most expensive.
  • Polishing – Some precious metals get stained as the years go by, including silver and copper bracelets. This repair process cleans the metal and polishes it to return it to it's previous state.

Jewelry repairing shops have the ability to fix a wide variety of pieces including bracelets, necklaces, watches, and earrings of vintage designs. In order to provide these repair services, jewelry stores need to keep clasps, pins, and other items made of previous metals such as silver and gold on hand for replacements. When learning about the jewelry repair shops in your area, one must consider what types of training they are skilled in. Many of the repair experts take courses through schools that teach them how to use hand tools, gems, white gold, silver, and crystal to design their own pieces. They might also take classes that focus on restoring antique items. Although fine jewelry like pendants, bracelets, necklaces, and watches often cost more to repair, stores can offer their services at cheaper prices by purchasing their items from wholesale suppliers. Wholesale companies offer discounted prices to stores that purchase bulk orders of beads, gems, and precious metals. These low prices help the shop attract more customers. In addition to getting repair services for a jewelry store, you might also be able to purchase custom designs made by a professional who works there. Since these designers provide custom services, it is possible to purchase earrings, diamond rings, and other items that are made of the specific materials that you prefer. These professionals might also have the skills needed to create repair parts for your items. That means they can still fix your vintage schools rings and pendants even though the replacement parts are no longer available through wholesale companies.
