Jewelry is a beautiful accessory, but when it is often worn it can become brittle and break. This is especially true of heirloom pieces, such as vintage and antique jewelry. However, these pieces can often be saved, salvaged and repaired by jewelry repairmen. The price will of course depend on the material being used and how much repair work must be done. Below are common terms used in jewelry repair.

  • Resetting – Used mostly with gold, silver and diamond rings, but also with some watch settings. This process removes the gemstone, such as a diamond, gem or crystal, from its old setting and places it in a new one. This is a popular choice for fine diamonds that the user wants to reset from a yellow gold into a white gold ring, or to transfer from a silver to a gold band.
  • Custom Setting – Often used with heirloom pieces, such as parts of an old necklace that a user may like to recycle the diamonds into earrings or a ring. This is similar to resetting, except in this case either the owner or the designer will make their own custom setting to house the gemstone.
  • Resizing – Used for watches, rings, necklaces and bracelets. It may involve removing or adding bands to the material. The price will vary depending on the type of precious metal used if bands are going to be added, with gold being the most expensive.
  • Polishing – Some precious metals get stained as the years go by, including silver and copper bracelets. This repair process cleans the metal and polishes it to return it to it's previous state.
