Karate and Martial Arts Instruction Terms to Know

There are numerous styles of martial arts that are practiced worldwide. Some of which are karate, jiu jitsu, wich chun, and hapkido. As you may know, these martial arts originated in different countries, and are currently taught in schools of self defense across America. Many of them employ kicks, punches, unique blocks, and striking techniques. Since these art forms were originally started as forms of combat, they incorporate various weapons as well. Below you will find a few helpful terms that may expand your understanding of martial arts instruction.

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – A martial art that originated in Brazil, and focuses on ground fighting, as well as grappling. It was derived from traditional Japanese jiu jitsu, and is now commonly used in mixed martial arts events.
  • Wing Chun – This is a form of traditional Chinese kung fun that focuses on simple movements and powerful striking techniques. Close range combat, some grappling, low kicks, and vertical straight punches are all used in this style.
  • Kwoon – A training hall or school used for Chinese self defense instruction. This includes styles like Shaolin Long Fist, Choy Lee Fut, Wing Chun, and Tai Chi Chuan. The Japanese version of a kwoon is typically referred to as a dojo.
  • Sifu – A teacher or instructor of kung fu and Chinese martial arts. This is what students are told to address the teacher as. In Japanese styles like karate and judo, the teacher is referred to as a sensei.
  • Mook Jong – Also referred to as a wooden dummy, this is a training device used in styles like Wing Chun kung fu. It is often made from teak or oak, and has two upper arms, one lower arm, and a single leg. Various techniques and combinations can be applied to the mook jong.
