Important Terms Relating to Keys
Keys are used everywhere, in residential and commercial areas, to lock our automobiles and our houses, but few people know much about how they work. So if the dead bolt you've installed at home refuses to work, if you need to replace a house key, or if you need to make a copy of one before it gets lost, you should know how to properly explain what must be done. Here are some important terms to keep in mind.
  • Bow – The part of a key held by the fingers.
  • Blade – The part that is inserted into the keyway.
  • Keyway – Though it has been generally replaced by the popular term "keyhole," this is the preferred word for the opening in the lock where the blade is inserted.
  • Master Key – One that opens any given lock in a related set.
  • Teeth – The pointed, protruding parts of a blade.
  • Notches – The cut-away areas that allow it entry into a specific keyway.
  • Valet Key – Used in cars, it can be used to start the engine but, as a security measure, does not allow access to the car's trunk or glove compartment.
  • Fob – Another word for a key chain or key ring.
  • Skeleton Key – A simplified, easily duplicated type made to open many different locks. Not to be confused with a blank, a key that has yet to be shaped by a locksmith.
  • Double-sided Key – A type with teeth and notches on both sides of the blade; this makes it more difficult to duplicate than the single-sided variety. Locks that require double-sided keys are also more resistant to lockpicking, providing an additional level of safety.

Keys are an important, if not always immediately prominent, part of life. Important for home and car security, they have been around for thousands of years, and today they are often found dangling from key rings. They range from the simple familiar shape to advanced entry intelligent keys, which use electronics and are usually found in cars. This makes replacement services all the more important and fortunately they are often readily available. Key and lock companies cover a broad range of services, including making duplicate keys and installing control access systems. When people think about these types of services, they usually picture someone breaking into a residential house or commercial safe. Security services are in the business of preventing this from happening by providing a copy using blanks, or even skeletons for multiple locations. Securing your house or car means not having to replace a key later if at all possible. Of course, even with the strongest bolts provided by stores specializing in keys, sometimes a locksmith will be necessary. Locksmiths specifically target situations in which fobs have failed or been lost. They can gain access to automotive and home systems, and also provide mobile services. They can even install a new lock or duplicate some keys should the need for it arise. Most will know how to make a master or skeleton key that can gain access to several different locks of the same type. For more information on key services, you can speak to employees at a locksmith company. You can also visit your local home improvement warehouse, which provide you with many security-related services. Often, you can find a local locksmith online. Whatever your lock and key service needs may be, their is certainly a professional in your area that can help.
