Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Terms

Kitchen cabinet refacing may be a great money-saving option for you if you do not like the look of your dated cabinet. This is less expensive than the cost of gutting and rebuilding your kitchen. Before signing a contract to reface your kitchen it is important to do a lot of research to familiarize yourself with refacing terms.

  • Resurfacing - Putting a new top layer on a counter. Resurfacing is an affordable option if you do not wish to finance a new set of cabinets.
  • Veneer - Thin pieces of wood typically made of oak or cherry that can be used reface a cabinet front panel.
  • Glaze - A staining process used while refinishing natural natural wood.
  • Cam and Bolt - Name of the connection hardware used on most cupboards.
  • Toe Kick - A kind of molding that can be used during a refinishing project to cover an open space under a counter or cabinet.
  • Laminate - A flat and hard material used when making or remodeling counters and floors.
  • Stain Color Palettes - Samples of colorings and coatings you can paint onto wood if you are refinishing cabinets on your own. You always want to look at a variety of stain colors before beginning the painting process.

Sometimes, kitchen and bathroom cabinets need to be refaced. Over time, these fixtures can show signs of warping and need refinishing and resurfacing. This can be don as part of a complete refacing renovation. Before World War I, kitchens were mostly comprised of freestanding tables and a dry stock pantry. Historically, in small homes cupboards were used for dish storage, but larger homes typically stored items in the dining room or butler's pantry. The industrial push after the war lead to the built-in cabinet design, with a counter spanning across several cabinets at once. Fixtures were made from some kind of metal and are now popularly made of stainless steel. Wood and laminate cabinets remain popular and continue to be used in refacing and resurfacing jobs. The basic design of a cabinet fixture is a box with a door on the front. A handle of some sort is attached to the door to make opening and shutting it easier. Sometimes the interior of the box is covered with wallpaper to seal out moisture, but this can also be achieved by painting. Most of the surface material is made of particle board or plywood, but the frames and doors are usually solid wood. Hardwoods, like oak, walnut and maple, are more popular than cherry and beech wood, because they are usually cheaper unless you can get them from a wholesale dealer. Bathroom vanity fixtures and handles are often made of metal. Custom repair and refinishing jobs should be done by a trained carpenter. Carpenters know how to remodel and reface cabinetry to achieve the desired refinished surface. Painting can be done by almost anyone, but carpenters are the professionals to call for proper refacing.
