An Overview of Labor Organizations
Labor organizations have a long and colorful history in the United States. The primary activity of these unions was to provide rights to employees through collective bargaining under the law that workers did not have previously. The unions were originally created in the 19th century, during the industrial revolution to protect employees working in factories. Today, labor unions are present in many other industries as well, including agricultural, construction, and other businesses. When the industrial revolution began, factory workers obtained jobs never done before. Whether you were a man, woman or child, you could go to work in one of these businesses. Unfortunately, the long hours and difficult working conditions led to the labor organization movement, to protect workers. Unions were formed through speeches of the oppressed who acted as activists for employees; lobbying for more rights and better working condition. While labor organizations often began on a local level, they became in international movement. Non-profit associations are now available on an international level, to help employees receive the assistance they need to work at professional jobs in a safe environment. In 1935, the National Labor Relations Act was passed by congress to regulate non-governmental labor organizations and their activity. In 1955, the American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations was formed. Unions can make the choice to join this non-profit organization, which represents labor unions across the United States. This organization is known for it speeches, information and pro-labor activity that has helped many employees receive better wages, benefits and working conditions since its inception. Delegates from each union represent their organizations in the AFL-CIO, ensuring that every union gets a voice in this association.
