Land Clearing & Leveling Terminology

Clearing land is the process of digging out and removing brush and trees, having overgrown vegetation trimmed and pruned, grinding down tree stumps, and clearing out the debris. The land is then leveled to create a stable and even lot for constructing buildings, developing farmlands, or providing water drainage solutions.

  • Debris – Debris is the excavated brush and vegetation resulting form land clearing, which you must dispose of properly.
  • Land Clearing Permits – You must acquire clearing permits for the sake of environmental protection and to avoid runoff onto nearby properties.
  • Four-wheel Tractor – In the case of a wet lot, a four-wheel tractor with tractor blades at the rear will be used to level land. A hydraulic drag bucket is generally used for dry land. Use or this equipment will factor into the total cost of clearing and leveling.
  • Laser Leveling – This system requires a higher upfront cost for use of the machine but results in smoother, more level fields.
  • General Engineering Contractor – This type of contractor has demonstrated through licensure that he or she possesses the niche engineering skills needed to clear and level land.
  • Stump Removal – Once a tree is sawed down, the stump must be removed with a tool called a stump grinder. You can rent this equipment and do it yourself, or have the contractor take care of it.
  • Topographic Survey – After your land has been leveled, a topographic survey will demonstrate the soil levels. This will guide workers in figuring out how to redistribute the soil for a clear, even finish.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to clear and level land, especially when new homes or other structures are being built. Structures like offices, homes, pools, and sheds need to be built on a flat surface. In cases where hills or dips in the terrain are present, leveling is needed. The job of land clearing and leveling services is to cut down trees and level the land to make way for developments, roadways, parking lots, and buildings. They may utilize such equipment as tractors, bull dozers, diggers, and excavators for these projects. Other tools and machines may be needed to pull brush and overgrown vegetation. Land clearing and leveling professionals may have backgrounds in landscaping or construction, and are often contractors who either work on their own or as part of a company. Most will provide both residential and commercial services, but some will only concentrate on one or the other. The internet is a good resource to find local companies, as are ads in the phone book. Other services of land clearing and leveling companies include soil installation and debris removal. Debris removal is a vital part of the whole process, as clearing a lot for construction requires a clean work space. They may utilize the downed trees for future building purposes or firewood. Some businesses are concerned with the environmental impacts of the job and really try to incorporate that aspect into their services. Landscape contractors can help on a smaller scale with vegetation and small tree removal. Land clearing and leveling services typically work on a larger scale to make way for buildings. There are usually hordes of workers involved, all with their own job to perform. One may operate a tractor, while the other may act as a guide to coordinate the project.
