Terms for Laundries

Whether you don't have a washer and dryer in your home or you need to do much larger loads than personal laundry facilities allow, choosing to do laundry outside of the home means that you will be faced with a decision. You can choose to wash it yourself at a Laundromat, or hire a professional laundry service to do it for you. Below are a few important terms to know when deciding on the best way to get your clothes clean.

  • Laundromat – A room full of coin-operated washers and dryers that is open to the public, where customers must operate the machines themselves. While more time-consuming than employing a laundry service, a Laundromat is a cheaper option. Laundromats may be monitored by an attendant who sells laundry soap and detergent, makes change and watches the machines for theft.
  • Washateria – A washateria is a fully-automated laundromat facility with no attendant present in the room.
  • Wash and Fold – Also known as a full Service wash or a fluff ‘n fold, wash and folds are full-service laundries that will sort, wash and fold your clothes for you. Soap or detergent is provided. This is a faster but more expensive option than a laundromat.
  • Minimum Fee – Some full service laundry companies impose a minimum charge. Therefore customers may choose to bring in larger loads.
  • Soap vs. Detergent – While both products are used to get clothes clean, soaps can be made from natural ingredients while detergents might be made from synthetic surfactants. The advantage of detergents is their effectiveness in hard water, in which case soap tends to leave a grayish residue on clothing.

People who do not own their own washers and dryers might want to wash their clothing at laundry mats that have coin operated commercial machines that can be used by the public. Depending on where you live, you should be able to find several Laundromats in your area. Many of them are listed in your online directory and on the Internet. Some people find that there are so many laundry mats to choose from that they cannot decide which facility is best for them. By following these guidelines, though, you should be able to find a facility that suits your needs. When you first contact the clothes cleaning company, you will want to determine how much experience they have. You can do this by asking them how long they have been in business. Those with several years of laundry experience should have the commercial and industrial grade washers and dryers that you need. Find out if the laundry center offers any free services to their customers. Many of them will have detergents and fabric softeners for sale that you can use if you forget to bring your own. Be sure to ask them if you should add these products before or after the spin cycle. If you need dry cleaning services, then you should be sure to ask the clothing cleaners if they offer this service as well. Find out how much they charge for small and large loads so that you can compare the costs of the cleaning companies and choose one that matches your budget.
