Self Service Laundries: Popular Terms Defined

If you don’t have your own washer and dryer, those weekly hauls to the laundromat can seem daunting. But never fear, for a self service laundry facility can feel homey enough. Expect to run across these terms when shopping for the perfect place to clean your dirty duds.

  • Commercial washer – This type of washer is much bigger than usual, allowing you to wash large items such as drapes and comforters.
  • Coin operated – The hallmarks of self service laundries, coin operated washers and dryers takes a certain amount of coins—these days, usually just quarter.
  • Coin changer – This machine takes $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills and then dispenses that amount of coins.
  • Extra capacity equipment – An extra capacity washer or dryer will allow you to load it with more clothes. Though these machines cost more per wash, they might save you money overall.
  • Detergent dispenser – If you get to the laundromat only to find that you forgot your favorite lavender-scented soap, never fear. You can buy individual packets of detergent, along with fabric softener and dryer sheets, from this vending machine.
  • Hamper – Facility hampers have wheels that allow you to tote them through the room. They typically come with racks so that you can hang your clothes up, and won’t have to iron them at home.
  • Industrial dryer – Many laundromats have these types of dryers, which work much faster than the one in your mother’s basement.
  • Wash and fold service – If you want to just leave your laundry and go, look into using a laundromat’s wash and fold service, which will generally cost you by the pound.

If you don’t own a washer and dryer combo, you may find yourself heading to the nearest laundry service to do your colors and whites. Commonly called Laundromats, these self-service facilities typically feature coin operated washing machines and dryers, plus plenty of seating for those who want to stay and wait. They may even have a TV or two, or even Wi-Fi connection to make the wait bearable. Self service or coin operated laundries may also be found within apartment buildings, hotels, and condo complexes, with one central laundry room where people can wash their clothes. You can bring your hamper full of dirty clothes down to the laundry room, add in a few quarters, and you’re good to go. Many self service laundries sell all the necessary supplies you need to wash your load of clothes, such as soap, detergent, and fabric softener. These can be purchased for a fee, but of course you can bring along your own. In addition to the commercial washer and dryer machines, other equipment may be located on site, such as industrial ironers. Self service laundries may be completely automated, or there may be a staff member or two on site to assist with any questions or difficulties. To get your clothes and blankets clean, seek out a local self-service laundry facility, and don’t forget the quarters. However, these days, in some of the larger Laundromats, you can obtain a laundry smart card system. This private issue debit card system operates in the same way as a debit card, where you put as much or as little money on the card as you want. Then, when you do laundry, you swipe the card and the cost of a load is deducted.
