Popular Liquor Store Terms Defined

According to one popular myth, the word “cocktail” derives from the use of roosters’ tails to garnish beverages in Colonial America.   • Proof – “Proof” refers to how much alcohol is in the beverage, listed by percentage. Beer is typically at about five percent, malted beer is around 7-9 percent, and liquor is close to 80 proof.
  • Wholesale – The sale of wholesale spirits is usually limited to licensed vendors. However, you can find wholesale and discount prices online, or look for discounts when buying drinks by the case.
