Wholesale Liquor Terms to Know

Liquor is an intoxicating distilled beverage that includes a higher amount of alcohol than beer or wine. Liquor is often sold by wholesale distributors in stores where customers can buy an entire bottle instead of just a drink or two that they would buy at a bar. Liquor stores often also sell varieties of beer and wines that are not found in other retail stores, such as microbrews. Below are some common terms often associated with wholesale liquor distributors, including the different types of liquor sold.

  • Brandy - A type of liquor that is made by distilling wine. The alcohol content in brandy varies from thirty to sixty percent. It is often considered a desert liquor and drank after consuming a meal.
  • Gin - A type of liquor made by distilling alcoholic grains and juniper berries. The alcohol content in gin varies widely, from thirty to ninety-six percent. Ninety-six percent is considered the upper limit for liquor, as it cannot be distilled any higher.
  • Vodka - A distilled beverage made by grains and potatoes. It is traditionally made in Russia and while there are cheap domestic versions of vodka many stores may also sell direct imports. It usually has forty percent alcohol content.
  • Tequila - A distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant. It is a traditional drink of Mexico. It's alcohol content varies from thirty to fifty percent.
  • Whiskey - Liquor that is made from barely, wheat and corn, as well as other grains. It is traditionally aged in wooden casks. In the United States, moonshine whiskey was often available during Prohibition and although it is outlawed today, it is still often made in many rural areas. However, moonshine is not for sale at retail stores.
