Terms for Livestock Equipment

Livestock equipment encompasses the supplies that are necessary to care for and raise livestock for sale, agriculture or other purposes. The supplies are necessary for small farmers and even the bigger cattle ranches. Livestock equipment can usually be purchased at agriculture stores or through an auction. Below are some common terms used with livestock equipment.

  • Stall – A small area where the livestock can safely eat and sleep, usually located within a barn or stable. Stalls are mainly used with horses, cattle and pigs.
  • Bedding – A type of material where animals can comfortably sleep. Hay is one of the cheapest forms of bedding, though in some cases small wood chips and even old blankets are also used.
  • Feeding Trough – A long, narrow feeding bucket that can be used by several animals. It is either placed outside of the barn, or run through several different stalls. Food is placed in the trough for animals to eat.
  • Cattle Grate – A type of fencing that is used to keep cows and other large livestock out of a certain area. The grate is a series of small creases in the ground which the cows cannot walk over without falling.
  • Loading Chute – A type of fencing that is used to help herd livestock into a transport to take them to an auction, a show or wherever else they might need to go.
  • Animal Tag – A system of identification, where a small tag is attached to each animal. While small farms with only a few animals may not need a tagging system, large ranches use this system. It is often also necessary to use tagging when selling large numbers of livestock at auction.

Farmers require livestock equipment to operate their farms. Hauling livestock, in particular, requires the use of special trucks and trailers to transport horses, bison, cattle, pigs, and goats. Other equipment supplies needed on the farm itself may include feed bags, troughs, stall guards, chutes, and handling equipment. Farmers certainly need pens to keep animals like pigs and poultry in. They may need lots of buckets and milk coolers and storage containers, if running a dairy farm, for instance. Medicine can be obtained from area veterinarians, but they will also need the proper vials and administration tools to give this medication to the animals. So where do farmers get all these supplies? They typically seek out livestock equipment and supplies wholesalers when they need to buy in bulk. They can get pretty good discounts when they buy large quantities at once, which makes it far more economical than buying at the retail level. Wholesalers can provide bulk quantities of anything from tags and stall panels to gates and barn doors. However, some wholesalers have a specialty, such as fencing and other building supplies, or even general ranch and agriculture equipment. Some focus on equipment used in the breeding of livestock, such as horses, sheep, and cows. The wholesaler you need is easy enough to narrow down, through business referrals, online searches, and agriculture industry associations. Many wholesalers offer quality, state-of-the-art products that act as great investments in today's economy. These products can assist agricultural producers to operate a successful farm or ranch, raising, breeding, and caring for animals of all kinds. From round pens and feeders to stalls and rodeo equipment, wholesalers can sell, deliver, install, and repair the necessary equipment desired by farmers in this business.
